Game 49 Review: Chicago Phoenix vs. Toronto Legion

 

Although early in the season, this is a big matchup for both teams who will be looking to take points and most likely battle it out for a wildcard spot. The Phoenix in the first period took the lead with a goal by Scotty Sundin, his fourth of the season. That would be all for the first period as the Phoenix would take a 1-0 lead, however, they would soon strike in the second period to make it 2-0! PJ Daniels would net his third of the season and the Legion looked like it was all over for them, however, Mac Atlas would cut the lead to make it 2-1 heading into the third period. In the third period, Jimi Jaks with 10 minutes left would tie up the game and we would be heading to overtime! The shots were very one sided however, as the Phoenix at this point would have a 47-22 shot advantage! It only took 33 seconds in overtime as Wattson Power would find his first of the season and give the Phoenix a 3-2OTW in this matchup. My MVP for the Chicago Phoenix would be Wattson Power for scoring the OTW. My MVP for the Toronto Legion would be Joel Castle who went 46/49 to help the Legion secure a point!

GM 38 - Los Angeles Stars vs. D.C. Dragons

This all-American matchup had the Stars up against the Dragons. L.A. vs D.C. The battle of the acronyms. It was the tale of two teams that had a record of 2-2-0. It was an interesting match with the Dragons outshooting the Stars 33-23; a ten shot on goal difference. In fact, they came out hot in the first period with 12 shots on goal over Los Angeles' 4 shots on goal. The offensive barrage in the first period was enough to get the Dragons on the board. With a power play goal, John Poremba Jr scored just past the 9 minute mark for the only marker in the first period. Then the first intermission came along, in which a game of bumper ball soccer took place on the ice. It was very entertaining. After witnessing the chaos that was bumper ball soccer, the D.C. faithful unfortunately got a harsh welcome back to the action with Nezuko scoring their first of the year and tying it up for the L.A. Stars. This period also proved to only have one goal. Los Angeles was able to outshoot D.C. in this frame. The second intermission featured the jumbotron trolling various Stars fans around the building as well as a quick hockey game between two local U12 hockey teams. The third period got underway; the game tied at 1-1. The Los Angeles Stars would get off to a hot start with Dabnad Shaw scoring just over two minutes in. The Dragons would respond with a barrage of shots, outshooting the Stars 15-10. However, Art Vandelay would remain strong in the crease and an empty net goal by the Stars' Jens Lekman to secure the win for the Los Angeles Stars with a score of 3-1.

Game 36:

 Calgary Wranglers vs. Seattle Bears 

 

This was a ack and forth affair that had a little bit of everything between the Wranglers and the Bears. In the first period, Calgary got out to an incredibly fast start tanks to goals from Leandro Goncalves and Landon Wolanin, which gave them a 2-0 lead.  Seattle's defense answered the bell after this early onslaught, however, and stopped the bleeding there.  They kept Seattle out of the net in the second period and were able to keep the game within arm's reach entering the final 20 minutes. Seattle made the most of their opportunities in the third period, scoring back to back goals and tying the game at 2-2 with 12 minutes left in the game.  Just as it looked like Seattle would storm all the way back and take control of the game, Calgary's Daniel Janser broke their hearts with the game-winning goal.  3-2 was the final with the Wranglers coming out on top.

Game 46:

 London United vs. Riga Reign 

 

If you like high scoring affairs, this was the game for you. It didn't take long for Riga to seize control of the game, as Vaslie Lamb scored a goal just six minutes into the game, giving the Reign an early 1-0 lead. Sergey Preobrazhensky followed that up with yet another Riga goal, this time in a shorthanded fashion just a few minutes later.  London was firmly on their back foot and needed to answer back to have any chance.  Luckily for London, Adam Rage stepped up to the plate and scored for the United, cutting the lead to 2-1. The first period fireworks continued as Riga followed that up with yet another goal, followed by a matching goal from London.  By the time the horn sounded to end the first period, Riga held a 3-2 lead with both goaltenders feeling discouraged.  The next twenty minutes were much calmer, with both defenses settling in and preventing any goals.  When the third period came around, though, Riga put any chance of a London comeback out the window with two more goals, which sealed the victory for Riga, 5-2.
