Bears falter after strong start

SEATTLE, June 27, 2023 (Shaiba.ru) – There’s always a point in a season when a team hits a bump in the road. The Seattle Bears jumped out of the gates to start S89, racking up a 16-3 record in their first 19 games. Mood in the camp was high as Elias Lampi, Yaroslav Bogatyrev and Randy Bobandy all began what many believe will be career years.

The Bears had been getting great goaltending by new acquisition Cole Pearce throughout the first quarter of the season, with the Bears conceding just 3 goals in their 3 games running up to the latest sim.

However, this could all be about to change after the Bears had a disappointing sim that saw them drop a 5-4 contest against the New York Americans, a 6-3 loss against the Prague Phantoms, and a 6-5 overtime loss against the Chicago Phoenix, which resulted in the latter leapfrogging the Bears in the table.  After such a strong start, particularly on the defensive side of the puck, the latest losses got a number of people concerned on Bears social media channels.

“I think we have to not take these losses too seriously, but it’s certainly time for us to reflect on how we’ve played so far this season to date and make any changes that need to be made. Everything comes easy when you’re playing well, but our performance clearly dropped over the past few days. We need to turn this around and get back to winning ways to ensure that losing does not become a habit,” Bears forward Yaroslav Bogatyrev said following the 6-5 loss to the Phoenix.

After making the Continental Cup Finals last season, many predicted the Bears to be up their challenging for honours once again this time around. While the Seattle side may have come into the season with something to prove, could it be the case that the team started the season playing on adrenaline, and now their form is turning around?

“I don’t think that’s the case. We know exactly what we need to do to win games in the VHL. Sure, we’ve still got to work out how we will get around doing it in the playoffs, but for now, finishing a top of the North American Conference is what we did last season. Our team is getting better and better, as guys such as Randy and Elias take on bigger roles in the team. Every season we come in after the management makes changes, and we always seem ready to go. We’re not playing on adrenaline, we’re sticking to the Bears system that is making us an effective team and one that is up there with the best in the league,” Bogatyrev remarked.

The Bears have the opportunity to turn their skid around with another game against the Chicago Phoenix on Tuesday evening. They follow that up with three games in a row against European Conference does: the Helsinki Titans, Riga Reign, and Moscow Menace.
