An Interview with New Player Gustav Mattias

Recommended Posts

Here is an excerpt from my interview with the new player for the San Diego Marlins Gustav Mattias. My lines are in Italics. Gustav's will be in normal font. Please enjoy.

What was the reaction of your family and friends when you were drafted?

They were beyond excited for me with only just announcing that I was interested in the VHLM a week out of the draft I thought that I would not be on many people’s radars and was hoping that I would go somewhere in the third round. I must admit no-one was really paying much attention to the television until I received a phonecall from San Diego if I would like to go play there. Mum was a little disappointed that I had to go that far away but everyone was happy for me.

How did you celebrate after being drafted?

We were up all night partying with close family and friends. We made sure we ordered in some fish to well and truly celebrate going to the Marlins.

What are your thoughts on the team you were drafted by?

Over the moon, they are a very successful team which we all know as they took home the cup last season. The management and team all seem really great and welcoming so there isn’t anywhere else I would rather be drafted.

What are your goals for your first season in the VHLM?

I want to score at least 30 goals, I love scoring goals and I hope that I can get a few in the back of the net or else it would make me sad.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the VHL?

I think it is a great league that is in a fantastic spot there are so many teams and people and staff. I personally can’t see any changes that could be made any time soon that would improve it too much.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming season?

I think that San Diego would have a bit of a tough time repeating the cup win but I am hoping that we can make it to the playoffs and really try and shake things up.

What are you most nervous about about playing in the VHLM?

I am worried that my lack of defense will be a bit of a tough learning curve for myself I am hoping that we just have enough quality on the blue line that my lack of back checking won’t lead to too many games.

What advice would you give to young players who aspire to play in the VHLM?

Just get out and give it a go the VHLM scouts are out there and looking for any junior players that would fit in. As long as you show a dedication to the sport and an eagerness to improve I am sure that you could be a late round pick in an upcoming draft.

What is your favorite memory from your hockey career so far?

There was a playoff match where I was coming back from a calf injury the coach didn’t want to play me to much and only gave me limited minutes. I managed to score a hattrick in the game to win us the game 3-2.
