Game Discussion

With only a week left to go in the regular season, the playoff teams are set in stone.  Seeding for the North American Conference is virtually locked in with the Americans owning the top seed followed by the Meute and Wranglers.  While we do know who will be making the playoffs out of the European Conference, the positions are still very much in contention with only three points separating the Express, Reign, and Titans.

The first game we will take a closer look at is this close game between the Reign and Meute.  Riga got on board first with a quick goal from Brennan McQueen, his 44th of the season but just five minutes later, the Meute responded with one of their own.  Quebec would then take the lead with a Naomi Young goal midway through the first period.  Thanks to a strong performance from Lennox Moher, the Meute would hold on to their one goal lead and earned the victory by a score of 3-2.

Another big game, which was played just this weekend, was one between the Express and Wranglers with a final score that was far from indicative of how each team performed.  While Edwin Encarnacion and the Wranglers would draw first blood, they surrendered their only lead of the game minutes later on the penalty kill as the Express found their groove.  While the Express would go on to win the game by a 6-2 score, led by three points from both Andrey Zadorov and Mason Richardson, it was the Wranglers who controlled the pace of the game.  This one ultimately came down to goaltending as Blaine Olynick came up huge for the Express, stopping 51 of 53 shots while his team scored their six goals on just 22 shots.  While this was a big win for the Express that kept them in first place, it is not often they will be more than doubled in shots and still come away with the win.

Finally, we have this battle between the Americans and the Titans.  Here, the Americans looked to show the league why they are so heavily favored to win the Continental Cup and they were successful in doing so, displaying their tremendous talent in a 3-1 handling of Helsinki.  Defending MVP Odin Tordahl led the way for his team with two goals as the Americans enjoyed an 18 shot advantage over their opponents.  Goaltender Brick Wahl helped to ensure the win, stopping everything he faced aside from a Chris Raymond snipe in the second period.
