JCarson 747
At the recommendation of @Spartan I am writing this Article to look at potential options for TPE earning as I have had a number of discussions with people who find it difficult to write larger articles/ do impressive artwork and so don't earn as much as some others. I want to start this article by first confirming my understanding. Each individual can earn up to 12 capped TPE (I won't address job pay in this as I have no clue how that works) but to get that 12 an individual can do a 6 point media spot (or graphic), a 2 point VHL article, a 2 point Press conference (either answer or write) and some combination of 2 points from trivia, game recap or media spot review. I am not addressing welfare or practice facility in this even though I believe they are capped TPE. Are there options we could add that would allow individuals the ability to still put together 12 points weekly but not do the media spot. Things I have considered but I don't think this is an extensive list and would love to have other people brain storm options also: 1) Allow for up to 2 articles in a week - as long as they meet the criteria, why not 2) Player recap - similar to a game recap but you can pick a player not on your team and you write a recap of their impact over the last 2-3 games (approximately 1 sim) - worth 1 TPE and you can 2 in a week (75 word minimum) 3) Player Career review - think of it like a hall of fame article for someone who didn't make the hall of fame. Can't do any of your own players, player must be retired and have not played in the last 5 seasons - write a 250 word article detailing the career of a player, try to connect it to your current player (Why did they idolize this player growing up, were they a mentor or coach, were they from your home region) 4) Statistical Review - write an article of 250+ words looking at some specific measurable concept of the game - The article must be backed by some measurable stat, for a example do a review of goalies from season 91 and which one(s) let in the most Bot goals ,or look at season statistics on players in the VHL with less than 450TPE when the season started. Obviously some statistics are more difficult to get so i would expect to see the more simple ones completed more regularly. 5) Maybe once a season we can have a GM review task - similar to a press conference the players answer a short 6 question survey discussing their interactions with their GM Potential questions could be: Did you have any conversations with you GM over the last season, who initiated them? If you asked questions did your GM answer them for you, where their answers helpful? How frequently is your GM on your discord server? Has your GM helped you in setting direction for your player build? Has your GM discussed your TPE progression and things you can do to meet your TPE goals? These are just samples, there is a significant potential of questions. If everyone in the league answered the same questions it would provide an understanding of how particular GM manage their team (or don't manage their team) I don't think this is an extensive list, I expect others have some good ideas and I acknowledge some of these may need to be further thought out. My concept is how do we allow more people the option of building TPE through potentially doing more smaller activities. So that'd be changing the fundamental earning process of the league. I don't think it'd fly since earning has always been built around half your cap comes from a PT, and the other half comes from supplemental tasks. 16 minutes ago, JCarson said: 2) Player recap - similar to a game recap but you can pick a player not on your team and you write a recap of their impact over the last 2-3 games (approximately 1 sim) - worth 1 TPE and you can 2 in a week (75 word minimum) 3) Player Career review - think of it like a hall of fame article for someone who didn't make the hall of fame. When we introduced Game Recaps as a task, I learned a lot about what can/can't work as an additional supplemental task. When I was suggesting various themes or game write-ups before they went into game threads as an "activity booster," the feedback was always "why can't people just write these as VHL.coms in the first place?" Someone can write 2 player recaps for 75 words each in a vhl.com article, for the same amount of TPE. Player career review/statistical review are great media spot ideas! Maybe that I'm hearing is that like the money leagues, perhaps we need the league to be putting out thematic ideas for users to complete tasks around. For example, it'd be specifically themed vhl.com articles, lets say "topic of the week" as a theoretical name. Maybe this week the topic would be your player career review - users can pick a retired player to write 150 words about or make a graphic about them for the 2 TPE. Next week it could be statistics. Week after could be league leaders. Or it can be much more creative like the SHL and their season-long story line about being abducted by aliens or some shit like that. Maybe then we'd hire someone to be posting these weekly "topic of the week" threads for folks to reply in, and then they can also do their normal, independent vhl.com article. Sound interesting at all? 21 minutes ago, JCarson said: 5) Maybe once a season we can have a GM review task - similar to a press conference the players answer a short 6 question survey discussing their interactions with their GM Potential questions could be: Did you have any conversations with you GM over the last season, who initiated them? Have thought about it before and might try to get it implemented myself after discussing with RGB crew. Also I should read the whole thing before I start quoting stuff so I will do that now instead of making a bunch of posts in a row. 1 hour ago, JCarson said: Allow for up to 2 articles in a week - as long as they meet the criteria, why not We do in a sense. Is there any specific things that are preventing you from doing these already? We’re pretty relaxed about what we accept so just because it doesn’t have a rubric doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Or I guess it all comes back to: 1 hour ago, JCarson said: Are there options we could add that would allow individuals the ability to still put together 12 points weekly but not do the media spot. Right? As Spartan said it kinda goes against how the structure of the league exists but I shall keep reading. 1 hour ago, JCarson said: 5) Maybe once a season we can have a GM review task - similar to a press conference the players answer a short 6 question survey discussing their interactions with their GM Potential questions could be: Did you have any conversations with you GM over the last season, who initiated them? If everyone in the league answered the same questions it would provide an understanding of how particular GM manage their team (or don't manage their team) That is interesting… performance reviews of sort so that staff can actually see how GM’s are handling things (or not) behind closed doors. I’m not sure whether I’d call it a “task” per say but the idea is interesting. Ultimately the concern that always comes up when discussing “gives us more ways to earn” is whether or not the effort required to get it set up will actually lead to anything. We’ve actually added a lot of different earning options over the years but generally everyone does the same ones week after week purely because they are the best “bang for the buck” options. IE they are the ones that can be done the quickest or with the least amount of effort. We could add 50 task options but people are still going to just do the 4 that get them to 12 the fastest. Basically what I mean is that options are good but too many just become wasted effort for little gain. Coming up with theme weeks once a season gets us enough flack, you want that weekly? Hire someone for that role, money leagues all can manage it. It doesn't have to be nearly as vague as our theme weeks since the intent isn't to make something friendly for the entire league. It's just an option for people to participate in if they want to. To people need that level of prodding though? Like you’re basically allowed to talk about whatever you want so long as it’s league related so do we need someone to post every week “hey if you need an idea talk about this”? I wouldn't mind having it as a trial task for a season or something. I can definitely see the value of giving members a topic to discuss to get the creative juices flowing, or some motivation to write about something. JCarson 747
Would love to hear more input from others. Basically my point was that on more than one occasion I have heard comment about finding it hard to do the media spot from people in the London discord server. Since we were putting out conceptual ideas I thought it might be an option to allow more smaller tasks. i understand all the points above, Do think that potentially having an weekly topic may help some people in writing and I definitely think even without TPE involved doing an season or every couple season player assessment of GM may be worthwhile. Commissioners can't be everywhere at once so getting feedback could be valuable. People should 100% be more willing to try graphics or podcasts even without experience as well. I never cared for writing large pieces so I just learned how to do GFX instead (and this was back when they were graded and it wasn’t auto-6 haha) and then transitioned later to doing the CoDCast because I found it entertaining. MS’ are great for some but they aren’t for everyone and that’s okay.
