Rashford Showing New Commitment to Defence and Skating
David Rashford came into the league knowing only how to shoot the puck. It was a skill he refined from an early age just shooting pucks over and over again against his garage door. His first season in the VHL, however, taught him that in order to be successful he was going to have to improve in a lot of other areas - skating and defence included. His opportunities were greatly limited so he could not capitalize on his strength. In order to free himself up on the ice, Rashford has invested lots of time in being a better skater. Even though he’ll never be the fastest in the league, he realized he needed to be able to create separation to allow himself more time to get his shot off. Additionally, he had been working on his puck-retrieving skills so that he has the puck longer in order to make a play. Rashford still is incapable of finding an open player, but his focus should free him up to have more space to get his shot off and more touches to get more shots off. All of this will increase his offensive production which he’s currently trying to net out at 100 points.
