To get to the big leagues you first must compete in our league. The VHLE will test you physically and mentally for the tough road ahead. You'll be facing the best of the future. Be ready to make that difference for your team that drafts you."

"... Without further ado, Bratislava, you are on the clock for the first overall pick in this year's draft."

Wally Lose was sitting in anticipation for his name to be called. He was sitting next to his family including Justin Lose.

"I went from the VHLM straight to the VHL because this league wasn't even around. This is a big moment for you. The first Lose to be drafted in the VHLE. You excited?" Justin nudged Wally. Wally had yet to process what was said as he was focused on the stage to see who would be called.

"Relax man. It's going to be a long night if you are this tense for every pick. Just sit back and enjoy the moment when it happens." Justin scoffed.

"Easier for you to say. You've never had to deal with this draft before. It's nerve-wracking." Exclaimed Wally. This caught Justin by surprise.

"I was the same way in the VHL draft. I thought I was going first round. I felt that I made a big impact during my time in the VHLM. When I didn't hear my name called I was distraught. I realized I had to relax and just be in the moment." Justin hoped that this would calm Wally down. He saw Wally relax his shoulders.

"We are starting the 3rd round at this time. Cologne Express, you're back on the clock." Was it already the 3rd round? How was that possible? Cologne already picked their player and was moving off the stage.

"Can you believe I had all these interviews and no one picked me yet? They were so excited to talk to me. I wonder what happened." Wally said defeated.

"Sometimes there are bigger fish that they want to catch first. You can't let it get to you. Whoever is going to pick you is going to get a fantastic player. I bet you'll be picked as soon as possible." Justin said jokingly.

"With the 14th pick the Rome Gladiators are proud to select, from the Ottawa Lynx, Wally Lose."

Wally wasn't ready for the blinding spotlight to hit him as his name was called. That brief terror as a white light was beaming on him not knowing what was going on.

"Get up dude! You just got called! You have to get down there." Justin pulled Wally up. Wally was shaken but understood. Slowly getting up and hugging Justin and his mom. The walk to the stage seemed like a mile away after each step.

"Welcome to the VHLE and welcome to Rome!" The VHLE commissioner shook his hand. Wally accepted it and had a huge smile. Getting his jersey and draft cap. He was in his new home. The moment was here and he was going to Rome.

The media scrum was fast and hard for Wally. Getting ushered and thrown in front of cameras to answer questions was nauseating for him. Hearing an Italian man trying to communicate with him he didn't understand. Luckily they had a translator on hand for this situation.

"You just got drafted to Rome. Congratulations. What went through your head as soon as you heard your name called?" The translator asked.  "You can tell me and I'll translate for you."

With a gentle nod, "I was so surprised. I didn't expect my name to be called at all. It didn't hit me until my grandpa pulled me up and told me to go down. I'm so excited though. I can't wait to go to Rome. It's a beautiful area and the fans are so loyal."

The translator told the media. The interviewer looked pleased with the answer and asked a follow-up question."

"Do you have anything to say to the fans back at the arena for the draft party?"

"I'm going to be giving it my all every night. I'll make sure that you won't regret taking me in the draft. The cup is coming to Rome."

The rest of the day was a blur. From all the camera flashes from the media to getting pushed and pulled in all directions. It was disorienting. He finally caught up with his family at the end of the day.

"So... how was it?" Justin punched his shoulder, excited to hear the experience.

"Let's talk about it over dinner. I'm starving. Italian?" Everyone chuckled.

Fast forward a few weeks. Wally signed his entry-level contract. With that money, he decided that getting an apartment would be good to have a place to retreat. He decided that he wasn't going to get anything crazy or expensive. Something that he can come back to and relax. Luckily, he found an apartment a few minutes from the arena for a good price. It's barebones but it'll do the job. He only had a few essentials to hold him over.

As soon as he put down the last box of clothes in the bedroom his phone started to buzz—a video call from Justin.

"So what do you think of your new place in Rome? I can't believe you got an apartment right by the arena. That's insane. When I was a rookie, I crashed with a teammate. I never got a place on my own."

"It's incredible. I'm still learning Italian on my app. Luckily the team has a teacher who is assisting us. The apartment is a bit rundown but for the price and location, I'll take it. I don't have much but that's okay. I can't wait to start skating." Wally laughed.

"You be careful and enjoy. We are headed out to lunch to celebrate."

"That's funny. I'm about to head out for a team dinner. You take care. And thank you for everything." Wally smiled.

This was only the start of Wally's journey and the legacy of the Lose name. After missing the cup with Ottawa, he wants to get back to the finals with Rome.
