Wolves defenseman Guntis Gavilrovs has put together a solid season through 25 games. He isn't lighting up the scoresheet with points but is making his presence felt in a big way on defense with intense physical play. 88 hits on the season, good for 8th in the league and he's on pace for over 250 hits again this season, probably close to 275 when it's all said and done. Gavilrovs also has 54 blocks which is a strong number as well. He only has 12 points through 25 games but on a Vancouver blue line that boasts 3 high end offensive talents around him we didn't expect him to light it up this season. Still, he is on pace for 30+ points which is solid for a young physical defenseman. He's played a mean game again this season with 92 penalty minutes, 2nd in the league, but he's actually toned it down of late and will be working on being more disciplined as the season moves on. One BIG improvement so far this year is his plus/minus, which sits at +10, way up from the -40 he finished with last season, so that's a great sign his defensive game is improving. Very encouraged to see that number especially being on the 1st pairing most of the year. As the season continues we expect Gavilrovs to work on his offense a bit more and stay out of the penalty box a little more as well. The Wolves look to be a playoff contender this season and Gavilrovs can't wait to get a taste of the VHL playoffs!
