They don't really need to do anything but create some level of emoting that the two teams have going into a series. I think you were on the right track with this project. The "Celtic Knot" effect is hard to pull off with these elements, but you did a fair job. At least you attempted something that is above most members skill level. The renders are really good with their team logos and color matching. I think the flow is off a bit due to the huge VS in the middle. It looks good with the texture, just maybe too large? One thing that, in my opinion, would help this graphic's theme would be to have the renders facing each other.
