dstevensonjr 445
The Continental Cup Final is here, and it sees the HC Davos Dynamo and Vancouver Wolves set to do battle for a title. In the regular season this year, the two teams met five times. Here's a breakdown of how their season series went: Game 1 Davos at Vancouver Game 60 Score: 4-3 DAV (SO) Shots: 49-30 VAN Davos had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first and second period, and both times saw the Wolves equalize within 4 minutes. Vancouver would take a 3-2 before the end of the second period, while Davos would tie the game in the third period to send the game to overtime, followed by a shootout. This game saw the Wolves dominate the shot clock, but some up short in the shootout. Davos' Mina had the shootout winner, while Merome Dilson had 46 saves in regulation and overtime, and 4 more in the shootout. Game 2 Vancouver at Davos Game 332 Score: 3-2 VAN (SO) Shots: 40-26 VAN The Dynamo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but that was all the scoring that they would do. A pair of powerplay goals, one in the first period and one in the second by the Wolves would tie the game, sending it through a scoreless third period and into overtime. With no goals over the final period and the extra session, the shootout would see Pierre-Marc Bouchard score the winning goal. After 2 goals against in the span of 1:10, Vancouver goalie Soju would not give up another for the final 49 minutes of regulation, as well as the overtime and shootout. Game 3 Davos at Vancouver Game 341 Score: 2-1 DAV (SO) Shots: 44-28 VAN The only scoring in regulation for this game included and early second period goal by Davos and a late third period powerplay goal by Vancouver. After a regulation where they dominated the shot clock, the Wolves were defeated in the shootout by a pair of goals from Davos' Antonia Bucatini and Grimgor Ironhide. Merome Dilson was the star of the show again for Davos, stopping 43 of 44 shots in regulation/overtime, along with both Vancouver attempts in the shootout. Game 4 Davos at Vancouver Game 355 Score: 5-3 DAV Shots: 56-22 VAN This game featured the most scoring of the season series, and it got started early with Davos breaking the ice under 3 minutes into the game. Vancouver would reply with a pair of powerplay goals less than 7 minutes later, and would lead the game 2-1 heading into the intermission. After a scoreless first half of the second period, there would be 5 goals in the back half, 4 of which would be scored by Davos. The Dynamo got on the board first to tie the game at 2-2, with the Wolves bouncing right back to take the lead 3-2 just over a minute later. It only took Davos 10 seconds to even the game back up at 3-3, and by the end of the period it was 5-3 Dynamo. That's how the game would end, with Merome Dilson making another 53 saves on Vancouver in the win. Game 5 Vancouver at Davos Game 407 Score: 3-2 DAV (OT) Shots: 38-29 VAN The teams traded goals in the first period, with Vancouver scoring and Davos responding. Following a scoreless second period, the teams would trade goals in the third, again with Vancouver scoring and Davos responding. In overtime, it was Antonia Bucatini capping off the win for the Dynamo. It was the Dilson show in net for Davos again, making 36 saves in the win for the Dynamo. Conclusion This series looks like it will come down to whether Vancouver can continue to carry the play on the shot clock and actually break through the brick wall that is Merome Dilson in net for Davos. The Dynamo need to continue to be opportunistic and take advantage of a counter attack that led them to win this season series 4-1. The closest that Davos came on the shot clock was in the last game (which was still 9 shots less than Vancouver had), but that didn't stop them from winning the series handily. My prediction is that Dilson continues to stymie Vancouver enough to win a tight series in 7 games.
