:que:Your Season Ninety-Eight Vancouver Wolves:que:

As you might have heard the Vancouver Wolves are in “cap hell”. As such the Wolves had to make a few unpopular moves this off-season to ensure the team would be under the current VHL cap of 44,000,000. With the cap announced to decrease by two million a season the next two seasons, even more moves are expected next off-season as well. Currently the Wolves only have eight roster players, four forwards, three defensemen and one goalie. In this week’s media spot, we would like to introduce and re-introduce the Wolves currently on the roster.

Logan Ninefingers (S92- RW)

Back for his sixth season with the Wolves, and fourth as the captain of the club, Ninefingers will be looking to top his career high forty-seven goal, 107-point performance he put up in season ninety-seven. After such an amazing season last year, it was clear to the Wolves management that Ninefingers must be kept around at all costs, and General Manager Frank Chadwick did just that singing Ninefingers to a contract extension that will hopefully keep him in Vancouver until his forced retirement season. After being drafted first overall back in season ninety-two VHL Entry Draft, Ninefingers had been a consistent performer for the Wolves, putting up 181 goals and 243 assists in 360 games played. With 424 points in his five-year career with the Wolves, Ninefingers currently eleventh in the portal era for most points in Vancouver history. With another 100-point season this year, Ninefingers can make a big jump up the list and sit in the top five in Wolves points in the portal era. Another impressive stat that Ninefingers will likely break this season and be the franchise leader in the Wolves portal era is game winning goals. Currently Ninefingers has forty game winning goals in his career, which ties him with Julius Freeman for the most game winning goals. Ninefingers is setting himself up to be called one the greatest Vancouver Wolves player to ever put on the Wolves sweater.

Wayne Gretzky (S92 – C)

The first new member of the Wolves roster that will be suiting up in season ninety-eight, Wayne Gretzky comes to Vancouver after spending the last four seasons playing for the New York Americans. Gretzky was drafted eleventh overall by the Americans back in the season ninety-two VHL Entry Draft, spending a season each in the VHLM and VHLE prior to joining the Americans prior to season ninety-four. Gretzky has two decent seasons to begin his career, putting up thirty-seven points in his rookie season and sixty-six in his second season but really started to turn some heads beginning in season ninety-six. In season ninety-six Gretzky put up thirty-seven goals and fifty-seven assists for ninety-four points, which is a career high for Gretzky. Last season Gretzky put up forty goals, a career high, and fifty-two assists. With the past two seasons, Gretzky has put his points above a point per game with 125 goals, 164 assists in 288 games. Gretzky has also seen action in fourteen playoff games in three seasons that New York made the playoffs. In those fourteen games Gretzky has put up six goals and nine assists. Gretzky came to the Wolves his offseason in a trade for the reigning Alexander Valiq and Sterline Labatte winner Guntis Gavilrovs on February 19, 2025. Now with the Wolves, the team is hoping that Gretzky can continue improving offensively to help the bare cupboards on the forward core.

Pierre Marc Bouchard (S94 – C)

Coming off his last season on his rookie season, Pierre March Bouchard or PMB as he is referred to amongst the locker room, PMB is looking to build upon his first 100-point season in season ninety-seven. While PMB wasn’t originally drafted by the Wolves, as he was drafted third overall by the Riga Reign, PMB has only played in the VHL with the Wolves. In three seasons with the Wolves PMB is well above a point per game with 108 goals and 132 assists in only 216 games played. Last season in season ninety-seven PMB put up career highs in almost every stat including goals (48), assists (53), points (101), plus/minus with a plus 28, shots (465), penalty minutes (85), hits (116), shots blocked (32) power play goals (12) and short-handed goals (1). Off the ice PMB might be one of the best locker room presences that I have come across in my lengthy time in the VHL. PMB is a constant face in the locker room, talking everything from VHL related topics to country related topics. I very much enjoy being on a roster with PMB and hope he can continue to kill it on the ice as well.

Lionel Collberg (S91 - D)

The other member of the club that will be making his debut with defenseman Lionel Collberg comes to the team after a trade with the Chicago Phoenix on February 19th, 2025, that saw a second round pick heading to Chicago for Collberg. Collberg is a veteran VHL defender playing in six VHL season with the Phoenix prior to being traded to the Wolves. Collberg has been a pretty consistent offensive defenseman in his six seasons with Chicago, including last season where he put up twelve goals and fifty-eight assists in seventy-two games played. So far in six VHL seasons Collberg has put up 63 goals and 321 assists, which puts Collberg at just under a point per game at 0.88 points per game. Collberg will be playing in the final VHL season this season and the hope is the Wolves can help Collberg bring home his first VHL championship in his final season.

Bollos de Trueno (S94 – D)

The breakout star from the Wolves last season, Bollos de Trueno will hope to build upon his 105-point season in season ninety-seven. Bollos was drafted fourth overall by the Wolves in the season ninety-four VHL Entry Draft. Bollos really took off last season putting up nineteen goals and eighty-six assists in seventy-two regular season games which is almost as many points as Bollos put up the previous two seasons combined. With a strong season in season ninety-seven the management team took notice and named Bollos, one of the assistant captain heading into season ninety-eight, an honor Bolls deserves from his work on and off the ice. After signing an extension with the club to stay in Vancouver until season 101, Bollos will hopefully be rewarding Wolves management with many more 100 point seasons the next few years, but if you ask the Mexican born defender, he will trade all the points in the world for more hits and fights. Hopefully Bollos will get the best of both worlds this season as the top defender on the Wolves roster as we start season ninety-eight.

Einar Mathiesen (S95 – D)

Mathiesen is coming off his first season in the VHL, which was his first season in the Wolves organization after an off-season trade last off-season with the D.C. Dragons. Mathiesen was drafted ninth overall by the Dragons in season ninety-five VHL Entry draft, after an impressive season with the Miami Marauders of the VHLM back in season ninety-four, where Mathiesen put up fifteen goals and fifty-one assists. Mathiesen would head to the now defunct VHLE with the Vasteras Iron Eagles after he was drafted by the Dragons, where he had another impressive offensive season with twenty goals and forty-five assists in seventy-two regular season games back in season ninety-five. After the VHLE was closed Mathiesen headed back to the VHLM in season ninety-six, where he played seventy-two games with the Philadelphia Reapers. In those seventy-two games Mathiesen showed he was ready to jump to the VHL as he scored twenty-seven goals and sixty assists. Mathiesen also appeared in eleven playoff games with the Reapers, where he put up one goal and seven assists. After three seasons in the minors, Mathiesen finally made his VHL debut. Mathiesen played in all seventy-two games, where he put up eight goals and thirty-one assists, playing in a depth role for the Wolves. Now with only three defensemen on the roster, Mathiesen and the Wolves hope that the U.K. born defender can take another step forward in season ninety-eight.

Soju (S94 – G)

The last member of the Wolves roster we will talk about today is Japanese born goaltender Soju. Soju is another member of the season ninety-four draft class for the Wolves, where the team selected him fifth overall in the draft that season. Sojus first season with the Wolves back in season ninety-five was in a backup role playing behind Dalkr Vidarsson as such Soju only saw action in nine games in his rookie season. After the season Vidarsson was traded making way for Soju to take over the starting role for the first time in Season ninety-six. Soju played in fifty-three games that season for the Wolves, as the Wolves would trade for Olober Skyo to help the Wolves down the stretch and into the playoffs. Soju would again be headed to the bench for the remainder of the season and playoffs as the Wolves would go on to win the Continental Cup in season ninety-six. Last season Soju finally was the main man in net all season long for the Wolves. In his first full season as the undisputed starter, Soju put up a record of 45-14-4 with a .928 save percentage and 2.24 goals against average. Soju also played in all seven playoff games for the Wolves, putting up a record of 3-4 with a save percentage of .907 and goals against average of 2.90. Now with s full VHL season under his belt, the Wolves and Soju are hoping for even more in season ninety-eight.
