Oppai Bumu - Prospect Report

At 6 foot 5 and 210 pounds, VHLM Prospect Oppai Bumu is one of the biggest players in the S100 class, and in a sport where a lot of taller young talents tend to gravitate toward defense where that long reach can be more beneficial, Bumu is a right-handed shot who can play wing and center.

"I'm a big forward playing more of a skill game rather than a physical game," Oppai told reporters at the VHL Scouting Combine earlier this week. "I think I have a really good shot and can also be a playmaker, but I would also say that I'm pretty good in the two-way play so as not to be a liability."

Bumu named the Menaces' Maverick Goncalves as a forward in the VHL he looks up to, and tries to emulate, citing "comparables" in their games beyond just similar sizes.

When Oppai said that his game is more skill than physicality, that might cause some pause or disappointment that someone with his assets isn't taking full advantage of them. It's not that he doesn't want to be more physical -- it's just a work in progress, he's still working on it.

"Definitely the physical play," Bumu said of his biggest focuses. "Just learn how to use my body more and then playing on the inside. Just basically be more around the slot on the ice and put myself in the hard positions." Bumu is still working on adding that physicality, having only been in North America for the last few months, coming directly from Japan where the style is generally less physical.

 

Oppai is a native of Miyamoto and grew up playing in his hometown club's youth system. He spent the entirity of his Junior career playing in the Harima League where he was consistently shown to be the most elite talent, although with the calibre of players surrounding him, some scouts question the validity of that talent evaluation.

So far Bumu has been contacted by three teams displaying interest and has responded to all three teams via email after they sent scouting questionaires.

He has a lot of the tools, obviously, that size is a big one, but he's got a scoring touch too, and the concern is really just whether he'll be able to find the toolbox and put it all together. That might make him more of a project, but a potential high-ceiling one if he pans out.

 

Final Thoughts.

 

Oppai Bumu is a puzzling read. He’s a 6’5” forward but doesn’t dominate the game in the way you’d like him to. He does have a hard shot that he uses to create quality looks, with good puck protection and a solid transition game, but his lack of vision and ability to create opportunities for his teammates, impacts his offensive ceiling. Selection in the first two rounds is a good bet based on his physical tools and if he can put it all together that might look like a bargain looking back in future seasons.
