Peter Payne - The Current Leader in All-Time PIMs

There once was a man who entered the Victory Hockey League with a goal that no-one else had even dared to dream of achieving. The man wanted to usurp Peter Payne as the VHL’s all-time leader in penalty minutes, a place in the standings that Payne had held for nearly thirty seasons. The man was laughed at for his ridiculous ambition that he refused to alter in the wake of the criticism he received. While the critics were briefly intrigued by the man sealing a PIM Championship in his rookie season, they were quick to return to their critical nature once the man found himself traded away from his starting role on a rebuilding team to be demoted to a backup for a transitional team. Even the man himself felt that his dream would become a lost cause with the amount of time he was sitting on the bench, however he found himself reinvigorated when he found himself as a starter on a rebuilding team once again after another trade, and it was here where he would take home his second PIM Championship. However, teams can only stay in the rebuilding phase for so long and after a couple of seasons, the man found himself traded for the third time in his career. Although he was initially wary of the move, the man realised he was in perhaps a greater situation with his new team, as he found himself as the star defenseman on a physically weak team. While the man would claim his third PIM Championship in his first season with his fourth team, the second season would be much worse, as the team decided to bring in a handful of similarly physical players to the man, including one who had previously beat him to a PIM Championship.

It was at the end of his second season with his fourth team that the man found himself entering free agency for the first time, his first opportunity to actively seek out a team that could let him fulfil his ambitions. It was this freedom of choice that aided the man in reaching his fourth PIM Championship of his career with his fifth VHL team. Now in his final season, the man has re-joined an old team, and looks set to achieve his fifth PIM Championship, however it is only now that he is ready to admit that he will fail to reach his goal of becoming the VHL’s leader in all-time PIM’s. The man has finally reached the number two spot in the all-time rankings for PIMs, usurping Jochen Walser and his 1626 PIMs. However the number one spot would now require a superhuman effort from the man, an effort which is simply not attainable in an era which no longer possesses rivalry games. The man who promised to triumph over adversity had found a hurdle that was simply too tall for him to jump over.

While the man will not be able to reach the goal he set out to achieve, he can take solace in the fact that he still finds himself in a position to become the all-time leader in shot blocks, as he is just 130 shot blocks away from becoming the all-time leader in that category. In addition, the man can be proud of the fact that, given the environment that the VHL now operates within, the man can retire knowing that it is very unlikely that anyone will ever take his second place spot in the PIM rankings.

While history will tell whether the man will receive the respect he desired despite falling just short of his goal, the one thing that has been made clear is that the man will not let anything stop him from reaching the penalty box, even in the face of death, for he is…
