Archie Ali Wagner - D

Archie Wagner is a product of Iowa, U.S.A. and is a big product at that coming in at 6'6" and 230 lbs. The big American is coming into the league with the hopes of throwing his body around and creating havoc on the ice. An imposing force who uses his big reach to knock pucks and bodies around on every shift.

Wagner was born and raised in Iowa. He grew up playing youth hockey there and would travel to Wisconsin and Minnesota to play tournaments. He would move to neighboring Minnesota to play for the University of Minnesota Gophers. The Gophers have a solid ice hockey program and were a better option to further his career then staying in Iowa.

Archie Wagner has been scouted as a big, physical defender who may be a step slow on his feet, but uses solid positioning to stay in the play. While he may not put up a lot of points, he'll make himself valuable on the special teams. His cannon of a shot is inaccurate but will be good along the side boards on the power play, and his defensive capabilities make him a prime candidate for the penalty kill.

What to Look Forward To!

Wagner is strong on his feet and has the balance of a brick wall. He uses solid lateral movement to cut off attackers and is a presence in front of his own net. A really aggressive player who uses his body to plaster smaller players against the boards. Wagner's long stick and reach help him poke-check with a high efficiency. Wagner is built for special teams play and will be a staple on them wherever he goes. His slap shot has been clocked at upwards of 100 MPH and will cause defenders to duck out of the way and goalies to cower, when he can hit his target with it.

What Not to Expect!

Wagner has never been a big point producer and that's not a trend that will change any time in the future. His passing ability is below average and he is liable to turn the puck over to the opposition when trying to complete even some of the most simple passes. With his physical brand of hockey comes a lot of penalty minutes, and that could end up costing his team through lots of shorthanded time. A big defender with stone hands who will cough the puck up in both ends of the ice. Expect the normal growing pains that come with an oversized defender making the transition from hockey to major league hockey.

Career Prediction

Archie Wagner will need to continue his training regiment if he hopes to make an impact on the league. Expect to see him hitting the top ten around the league in hits and blocked shots early on in his career. Wagner should be a solid top 4 defenseman who will be a good addition to any team that picks him up in the VHL.
