A Prospect’s Take on Blades v. Royals

Faux (9) streaking to the net in OT

I have never been to Bern before, but I will admit that I never expected it to be a great hockey market.  I know there are some very good Swiss players, but I never imagine a professional team/ league being really great here.  I was wrong.  There were players jerseys flooding the streets around the stadium hours before Game One of the finals.  TebowGow seemed to have been the most popular one, but the diversity of jerseys really had me appreciating how much these fans cared about the team.

Before the game started there was a small festival outside for the fans.  My favorite part of this was the song selection.  There was some Swiss rap I didn’t really get, but then they started playing “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer.  After the song started one of the Royals, named MC Hammer, came out to an impromptu meet and greet with the fans; I would have love to talk to him but the line was really long and I wanted to embrace as much of the atmosphere as possible.  Needless to say the fans inside the stadium were even more amped up for the game than the ones waiting outside.

It didn’t take me long to realize what all of the hype was about as the Royals came out of the gate swinging.  On the first line change of the game Chuck Goody sent a perfect pass to Muller who was streaking into the offensive zone like a freight train and sending the puck over the goalie’s shoulder.  The place erupted.

After two exciting periods where one team would have complete ownership of the ice the real game began.  Both teams played much more calmly and I really got to see what each team was all about.  After losing the majority of face-offs in the first two frames the Royals and Blades were able to break even in the dot during the third and I couldn’t help but feel like this time next year I will be one of the better draw men in the league and could really help my team get an edge.

The third period saw only 7 shots, all from Bern.  In overtime I saw the quietest rink I could imagine.  The love these fans have for the team really spoke to me in that moment.  Both teams were impressive on the PK in the extra time.  I found myself pulling for Bern with the people in the stadium, which made it all the more sweet when they were able to score an unexpected goal off a weird play where Goody was checked off the puck and it glided right to the center Marcel Faux.

While Bern is probably the furthest team from any of my family I can’t help but feeling like I could make a home here.
