BeanSobie 91
Babiy Scouting Report Babiy (#17) showcasing his greatest talent Born Name: Шеслей Бабій Anglicized Name: Wesley Babiy Position: Centre Age: 17 Handedness: Right Prefered Jersey: 16 Height: 6'2 Weight: 215 lb. Birthplace: Kiev, Ukraine Team History: (Age 10, Sokil Kyiv- MMM, Kiev) (Age 11, Sokil Kyiv- MM, Kiev) (Age 13, Donbass Jr., Donetsk) (Age 14, Cheltenham Tigers, Philadelphia) (Age 15, Germantown Athletics, Philadelphia) (Age 16, Germantown Athletics, Philadelphia) Strengths Wes is unafraid to lay his body out for a blocked shot 1. Face-Offs First and foremost Wes is a “Grind-Line” style centre. He plays the game like Blair Betts did in his prime, by focusing on one thing: keeping the puck out of your net by battling hard for it at every chance. From a young age Babiy was taught that the first battle is always the most important, so for years he focused on learning new ways to win face-offs. After he moved to Philadelphia and was one of the most skilled players in his league things started to change as the other team would try to bully over him to win the puck; instead of moving to wing, like his coaches wanted, Wes adapted and started to put on more muscle to give him the edge. 2. Defense Continuing with the hardworking grinder theme, Wes has also developed another skill to help his teammates: Defense. Defense is a pretty broad category that enompasses everything from blocking shots and laying out smart checks, to winning battles in the corner and being able to knock pucks loose with one’s stick. So it isn’t unfair to ask which of these skills Babiy excels in. Short answer? All of them. The strong Ukrainian has no issue putting his body on the line for the good of the team and will go to the dirty areas to do it. While his stick discipline is still improving, he has shown the potential with his puck handling to the makeup of being Datsyuk-ian with his defense approach to the game. 3. Playmaking Speaking of Datsyuk, that is the player everyone compares Wes to. Babiy’s game doesn’t end in his own zone. in fact, it is a game that just gets better the more you see him stretch it. After winning the puck in his end Babiy has all the skills to get it out to his wingers on a long breakout pass OR send it to one of his defenders with a quick, short, and safe pass. In his current league he is the leading assist and point man by a wide margin due to a decent saucer pass that just skips over opponents’ sticks onto his teammates'. Weaknesses Babiy has made many young goalies look good with his weak shot 1. Speed Babiy certainly isn't cumbersome on his skates, but he does have some issues. The extra weight he has put on in the past few years have made him slow on his skates, and he has trouble moving with the puck on his stick. Even without being a heavier body, Babiy’s general foot speed is below average. He is at his best when he sets himself up in either the offensive or defensive zone and lets his passing and defensive games speak for themselves. 2. Scoring Babiy’s worst skill is his goal scoring ability. Despite having the qualities of an elite passer, there is something with his shot that just does not look natural. It may be the way he holds his stick, or a poor core, but Wesley cannot seem to put the puck on net with any real force. If he is to be effective in the future he will needs speedy snipers flanking him throughout his career. 3. Checking Just because Babiy is a checking forward, does not necessarily mean he is a checker. His poor foots speed (as mentioned above) leads him out of position anytime he tried to put the body on someone. Not only does he lack the speed to cause damage with his body, it also seems like he is at times afraid to use his powerful body to hurt opponents. This softness will not translate well for Babiy in his journey to the VHL. BeanSobie 91
Just to let you know this probably isn't getting full marks. You need to write a 500 word overview about your player http://www.vhlforum.com/index.php?/topic/15247-rookie-profile-rubric/ That's not how I read that. I read it as: 500 overall, with at least 350 in the pros/cons. I figured since I had at least 600 in the pros/cons I would be alright from a word count perspective. Tylar 219
Overview: 2/2 - Yup. Lots of words, solid rookie profile. Maybe could've used a brief overview paragraph but that's not necessary really. Never listen to eagles in my opinion ( ) Pros & Cons: 3/3 - Good strengths and weaknesses. Grammar: 2/2 - Mostly minor things. Not enough to take away any points. category that enompasses =category that encompasseszone. in fact = zone. In factbreakout pass OR = breakout pass or poor foots speed = poor foot speed position anytime he tried to put the = position anytime he tries to put the Presentation: 1/1 Yeah. Overall: 8/8 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/21111-claimedrookie-profile-wesley-babiy-final-88/#findComment-229947 Share on other sites
