Nezhmetdinov Lays the Smackdown

VHL.COM

The VHLM season got underway today, and for many newly-drafted players it was a chance to show the league's fans what they're in store for in the coming season. One of those players is the little-known but highly-rated Evgeny Nezhmetdinov, coming to the VHLM from Kazakhstan, and boasting a reputation as highly skilled offensive winger. Nezhmetdinov was drafted 15th overall by the Oslo Storm, and made his competitive debut for the side as they travelled to Ottawa to take on the Lynx.

The Cucumber, as he is known affectionately by fans (following an ill-fated accident involving the vegetable that caused him to miss almost six months of junior hockey), is a small, agile winger with quick hands and feet, and an eye for the spectacular. For all that he holds within his offensive arsenal, one looking at his diminutive stature would have to assume that landing physical blows is not a forté of Nezhmetdinov's. On today's evidence, one would be mistaken for that assumption.

At the beginning of the third period of today's game the Storm were 3–2 to the good. Perhaps looking to shift the momentum in his team's favour, M. Nocturne Shamalamalamalon decided to pick a fight with the little Kazakh, and quickly regretted it. The Cucumber—or Kiyar, as they say in Kazakhstan—positively beat the hell out of Shamalamalamalon, and whatever momentum was up for grabs swung firmly in favour of the Storm: within ten seconds of the restart, Giovanni Reuel had made it 4–2.

Nezhmetdinov wasn't done there, though. Less than ten seconds after the expiration of his penalty he was at it again, this time coming to blows with Kewl Runnings. The result? Another victory for the Kazakh. Clearly Kiyar has more in his offensive locker than mere dekes and dangles; when called to do so, the little Kazakh can really dish out an ass-whooping... or two!
