Free Agency Rankings

Recommended Posts

This seems pretty simple on the face of it: rank the remaining free agents in terms of effectiveness on the ice at a VHL level. But this will take a look at 6 players in particular, and for one reason they are the best free agent of their draft class that's still available. So, without further ado, we take a look at 6 guys every team will want for the upcoming season.

S38 - Ashton Galbraith, RW (122 TPE)

Not very active since his drafting back in S38, Ashton Galbraith, coming from a prestigious lineage in the VHL, remains the clear choice for any team looking for a 1 year rental player. Galbraith only has 1 more year left before retirement and could be valuable as a 3rd line passing forward, dishing pucks to young snipers on the 3rd line or more.

S39 - Lukas Nykvist, C (273 TPE)

A first-generation skater, Lukas has talent as a scoring option that could end up on some smaller team's top 6 rotation for a few years while prospects develop. One of the few snipers that can take care of his own end in the faceoff dot and the passing lanes, Nykvist won't be looking for his career-high 50 goals in S41, but don't be surprised if a team picks him up and sees a point per game pace if given enough ice time.

S40 - Gunnar Skovsgard, G (160 TPE)

An odd choice given the recent focus on the importance of the goaltender in the VHL, Skovsgard does pose a significant plus to two teams in particular. Teams like the Seattle Bears and the New York Americans would benefit greatly from having a backstop that has quick hands, fast reaction time, and some agile moves with the skates protecting the net, if nothing else. While these are his only favorable attributes, these attributes make up the basic tenants of a goaltender's skill set.

S41 - Fedir Okranitz, G (281 TPE)

Another goaltender with good upside as will, Fedir would provide a big body in net for any team needong someone as a placeholder while looking for the franchise goalie. Or take Fedir, he still has 3-4 years left in the VHL. Okranitz can provide some relative relief in the shootout, excels at getting in position with the correct form in time, and closing the 5 holes of every goaltender well, especially for a free agent.

S42 - Travis Wilcox, RW (114 TPE)

Why not Sam Teibert? Travis can play defense, has a definitive passing game that makes him stand out as a role player instead of Teibert's all-offense dynamic. Wilcox has the defensive and physical capabilities to sub in as a penalty kill 2nd line option, a top 4 defender to fill a gap for a young defensive prospect, or a 2nd/3rd line grinder player for a mainly offensive team and can be a stopgap for teams without draft picks in the near future for 4-5 years.

S43 - Ryan Carlson, RW (15 TPE)

A weak draft for the VHL, only 1 forward made any strides toward improvement upon any base skills a person can bring to hockey. Ryan Only has a few things going for him - he can skate and he can at least hit the broad side of a barn with a puck and stick. Besides that, there's not much reason to pick up this prospect other than hopefully building on this project player.
