Latino in The News: Catching Up with Flip

Last time we spoke with Felipe "Flip" Rodriguez, he had just scored his first goal. Today, we speak to him after 45 games in the VHLM. He's sitting at nine goals and 20 assists. If you remember last time we asked Flip what his goals were for the season.  At the time, he said,"If I can get close to 10 goals and 40 points this year, I will consider it a good year.  Anything more than that is just great."

Let's see what he thinks about his stats now that he has a few more games under his belt.

Reporter: " It's been a while since we last sat down for a chat. How have you been since then?"

Felipe: "It has been a while, hasn't it? I have been great. Hitting the gym as often as I can. Hitting the rink to work on my skating. Practicing and watching lots and lots of film to work on my defensive game."

Reporter: "It seems like your work has been paying off. We have noticed an improvement on both sides of the puck. A lot more hits and shots being blocked by you, we have noticed. You are looking like a more well-rounded defenseman out there."

Felipe: "Thanks, glad to see someone else noticing."

Reporter: " One other thing we noticed was shortly after the acquisition of Sam Weaver, you were taken completely off the power play, any idea why?"

Felipe: "Maybe the coach forgot how to spell my name? [laughs] No, no, no, in all seriousness, I wasn't taking advantage of my power play time like I should have been. Coach knows what's best for the team and if that means me sitting on the bench with the man advantage, so be it. Weaver has a lot of talent, especially on offense, so it wasn't a big deal to lose ice time to him, you've seem his stat line the first few games he played for us. That being said, I'm glad to be back on the first PP unit and I expect to put more points up or I'll be riding pine again."

Reporter: "Last time we spoke, I joked saying maybe next time we'll hear from you after your first hat trick. Well, 45 games in and still no hat trick. Do you think you'll get a hat trick your rookie year?"

Felipe: "I wish I could answer that with certainty but with 20 games left, it's hard to say. I'll just say "Maybe" for now."

Reporter: "You're currently one goal shy of your prediction but 10 assists short. Did you over estimate?"

Felipe: "Not really, a few multi point games in a row and I'll reach my goal. I didn't expect to have 9 goals already so this is a great place to be in."

Reporter: "Thanks again for your time, Flip. Would you like to sign us off?"

Felipe: "This is Felipe Rodriguez for Latino in the News, don't forget to tune in next time."

That is all for this edition of Latino in The News.  We'll catch up with Felipe again very soon. Hopefully next time he'll have reached his season goals.

Feedback:
You've definitely been improving at a steady pace. Nice little interview you have here. I think your VHL team that drafts you will be proud. :)
