Individual 102
The Depth Defender Theo pre game When drafting a defender, you always hope you get that stud who can play both ends of the ice, or at least be efficient enough at defending his own end. Theo Matsikas, who was once a highly touted VHLM prospect due to his offensive ability, and consistency in his own end; has now found himself in the role of a depth defender. Theo was lucky enough to be drafted to a successful franchise, and have great team success. However, his individual progression has not been there, despite currently having his best individual season. Theo is starting to get up there in age, and how much he has left in the tank, is yet to be seen. We were lucky enough to catch up to Theo, and ask him some questions. Interview with Theo Matsikas Hello Theo, lets start off with an easy one. Can you tell us about your season? Of course, we may sit first in our conference, but I do not think we are happy with that. We want that title of being first in the league. I do not think we have played as strong as we have in past seasons, but we keep on keeping on. Personally, I think I am struggling a bit more this season. Sure I have more points, but I just don’t think my overall game has been there. I want to be stronger in the defensive end, and be counted upon in more situations. You mentioned it yourself, your overall game seems to be lacking. Do you think this has to do with how much you have left in the tank? *Laughs* Obviously no player wants to admit that, but maybe my time is coming. I'll continue playing until the management tells me I am no longer needed. I’ve been lucky enough to be on Helsinki my whole career. During juniors I was moved around each season, and it really effected my on ice play, and being comfortable off the ice. I’ve moved my family here, I’ve built friendships here, It’s where I want to retire. Other then that, I do not have a timeline for you, I think I have a couple of seasons left within me. This is your forth season in the league, can you tell us how it differs from juniors? Well I think that is pretty obvious, the players are better. The teams are more structured, and it takes a lot more dedication to be a stand out player in the big leagues. I went from being a top defender in juniors, into a role player in the big leagues. Sure it took a bit to get use too, but I am completely okay with that. I know my limits, and being a part of this team, I would play backup goalie if I had to. As you play more often, you mature, and you understand your role within a team. Not much else to say on that. Well that concludes our interview with Theo, we will look to touch base with him after playoffs.
