One of the biggest stories in the VHLM this season has been the battle for first overall in the Season 50 VHL draft.  At the beginning of the season, the race between Brampton Blades teammates Diana Maxwell and Theo Axelsson was too close to call.  Fifty games into the season, they’re still neck and neck.  With identical point totals and practice hours, the two won’t be making it particularly easy for GMs to make a decision on draft day.   The only things separating the two are more specific statistics - Maxwell has 46 goals compared to Axelsson’s 41, but Axelsson has the advantage on the defensive side of the ice with 201 hits - second-best in the league behind Moscow’s Travis Willcox.  That’s also not even mentioning Yukon forward Asher Donovan, who has forced himself into the conversation with an MVP-caliber 48 goals, 46 points, and 94 points - the best in the VHLM at the moment.

For many players, their focus would stay on team success rather than individual success.  Others might be psyched out by the amount of attention.  But for Theo Axelsson, the competition is what drives him.  While he was characteristically reserved after a 7-1 win over the Moscow Red Wolves, the Swedish forward did say through a translator, “I get along with Diana, but I want to be first overall.  Fighting for that spot motivates me to improve.  I want to be one of the best forwards of all time and this is just the first step.”
