His Story

Maximus Theodore Power was born in Anchorage, Alaska. He has no recollection of his mother, and was informed by his father one Skylar Power, that his mother had passed away shortly after he was born. Theo, as he liked to be called as young child was bred to be a hockey player. His father chose to home school him at a young age, so as to continue as much focus as he could on his future hockey career. Theo had very little decision on even what position he would play, as his father was obsessed with ensuring that Maximus played goalie. From the age of four, Theo had already mastered the butterfly position, as well as began working on understanding traditional goalie positioning, as well as controlling shots and rebounds. His father would often bring in other hockey players to work on his play, even at a young age he was participating in full on scrimmages, as well as running through some of the rigors of practice, drills, and so forth. Theo often got the impression that his father treated him as if he was his own property, and was trying to build the greatest goalie of all time, as opposed to raising a son.

Years went by, years of training, drills, saves, goals, the list goes on. The list of prominent VHL names that Theo encountered continued to grow in his youth. Names like Sullivan, Wahl, Braxton, Pajari, Laich, Kellinger, Angelo, among more. He even met some failed NHL players, such as Linus Omark, the Kostitsyn brothers, and Alexander Semin, among more. Despite his close association to the game as a kid, the nature of which he was trained left him feeling very detached towards the game. Indifferent even. He had a knack for playing goal, any midget to minor hockey games he did participate in he generally acquitted himself well. But his father never wanted him to participate in the "team" mentality, and as such he always joined clubs on extended try outs, or for stretches of the season/playoffs as a temporary starter. This disjointed involvement left Theo always wanting more. Not just out of hockey but out of life. The process ended up leaving him with far more questions than answers. Questions about his place in the world, about his interests in the sport, and most of all, about his father. Who was he really, and why was he so dominated by these singular obsessions?

Just after his twelfth birthday, Theo decided it was time to play detective. He knew he had to be cautious, his father got very abusive whenever he acted out, so he had developed the skills to know just when and where to pursue interests outside of hockey. Sneaking around when his father was on one of his "out of town" trips, Theo eventually found his fathers hidden safe, was able to decipher the code and finally see the truth. His father was in fact Skylar Rift, not Skylar Power. More so, his father had legally changed his last name to Rift, to hide his own identity. Theo discovered that he was living in a hidden facility, and that with the exception of a couple people, nobody really knew who he was. Sadly, that wasn't all he discovered. He also discovered a video tape, on it was the death of his mother. She was shot in the head by his own father, who he now saw was nothing but a raving mad man. As days went by, and he found the opportunity to sneak and find more evidence he would learn that his father very much was a two-face person. In one moment he seemed normal, and the next he was a raving lunatic. Theo had to escape the situation he was in, but how could he? He needed allies, and he needed to extremely careful as well.

By age 15 Theo, with the help of Ryan Sullivan, had mounted a serious case against his father, and was preparing steps to finally confront him, and hopefully end his current life as basically a slave to the sport of hockey. They planned it out perfect, Sullivan was training with and watching Theo whilst Skylar was out of town on one of his usual "business" trips. They had informed the police of their evidence, and the police were ready to intercept Skylar whilst he was out of town. However it was later discovered that Skylar had camera's in the entire facility, and knew of this plan. Instead of going out for business he fled the country, never to be seen or heard from again. Despite all the evidence Theo had against his father, police to this day have never been able to find him. But at least Theo was free, free to finish out high school with real people. Free to do whatever he wanted with his life.

Theo was taken in by Ryan Sullivan for his final teenage years, and completely shunned hockey. Obviously understandable considering hockey was his life for so many years. After taken a few years to study and observe as much as he could, Theo eventually decided to travel the world. He usually would spend a five to six months at a time in different cities across the country. Despite his fathers negative attributes, he was still rich from his time as a VHL player, and the state felt it only necessary that at age 18 Theo would inherit the fortune he was entitled too. So globe trotting became him. He spent time in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Cologne, London, Dublin, Riga, Helsinki, Stockholm, Davos, amongst travelling across small towns and cities in the Yukon, Brazil, and Africa. Despite travelling so far, and trying to keep his mind as clear as possible from the game of hockey, Theo couldn't escape it. He attended several VHL games in cities that hosted teams. The league his father played in. Finally, after years away he returned home, to Anchorage. Now a 26 year old wondering what he was going to do with the rest of his life.

He laid out all his options. He could return to schooling, and go in any number of directions. He could sit on the fortune he had, and try to find a soul mate to spend the rest of his life with. He could start a business, maybe he could be a private investigator and work on helping people, people who could of been in horrible situations growing up like he was. That probably seemed like a natural calling. But all the options he laid out, none of them settled right with him. Every option felt like he was letting his father, who he now only referred as either Rift, or the two-faced bastard, win. The decision was made, he knew what needed to be done. He needed to enter the VHL, just to spite his father. His father had dreams that one day Theo would raise the Stanley Cup, and somehow be the heir apparent to his own failed career. But those goals were too in line with his fathers own ambitions.

No instead Theo had a better plan. He would join the VHL, he would spent 8 seasons in the league, on the New York Americans no less. Yes, it was perfect. His father had left the Americans high and dry after joining the team with the Ryan Power agency, his cousins agency. But now his uncle had returned to GM the team he once left behind. It was perfect. He would join the Americans, join the VHL, and he would be a Hall of Fame player, a player better than what Rift, what that two face ever could of dreamed himself of being. His entire career would be simply to spite that of his fathers. He called his cousin Ryan Power, and the rest as they say is history. Now embracing his true heritage, unafraid of his own capacity, Maximus believes that he has the capacity to be one of the best goalies the VHL has ever seen.

Review: This was really sad at the beginning, but I found the last paragraph to be written very well. It ended up making the entire story carry a humorous undertone. Liked reading this quite a bit. Also fuck Skylar Rift, what a doucher! Good Spelling and grammar. The flow was a little spotty in some spots but it provided some extra entertainment in reading it. 1361 Words. Great Job!
