Guest
Lotto 6/49 Every year the VHL Entry raft nets some great returns for teams who use their picks to select highly touted prospects. With what seems like a disappointing future when it comes to the future strength of drafts, the VHL might be entering a dark age. With ringleaders not caring much for details into the obvious lack exposure for the league, the VHL may rely solely on it's first round and first round only. However in the past few season we have seen quite a vast arrangement of prospects from all sorts of parts of the world. Hockey hotbeds such as Canada, United States and Russia have always had great luck in developing their prospects. The CHL, NHL and KHL all recognize this by drafting eligible players to their respected leagues to boost their talent. The VHL is no different and in fact doesn't hold favorites when it comes to nationality. In this report we break down a few countries that have given us a good crop of players. Canada In recent years we have seen a bigger crop of Canadian prospects for the Victory Hockey League. The notable big names for many years were not Canadian-born but times have changed and Canada is once again providing with great lottery selections. In recent years this is what Canada has provided us with: S33 - 1st Overall ( ) - Wesley Kellinger - Halifax, Nova Scotia S34 - 1st Overall ( ) - Doug Clifford - Quebec City, Quebec S34 - 3rd Overall ( ) - Steven Smyl - Toronto, Ontario S35 - 2nd Overall ( ) - Naomi Young - Victoria, British Columbia S36 - 1st Overall ( ) - Godavari Yumalatopinto - Toronto, Ontario S36 - 4th Overall ( ) - Damon Tyrael - Edmonton, Alberta Despite the teams that drafted them very high, some of these Canadian born players have shuffled teams. Wesley Kellinger was drafted by Davos but was shipped to Quebec City where he is closer to his hometown and family. The skill level of Canadian players has never been questions and it seems the VHL General Managers agree. United States United States has come a long way from the days when only a few studs would go on to make noise. From the days of Hull and Modano in the NHL to the days of Fowler and Schneider in the VHL. Recently they have had good success with some of their young prospects but the lottery selections haven't been as frequent as their neighbors to the north of them. Here are the recent American-born prospects that have been selected using lottery picks: S32 - 1st Overall ( ) - Jack Sound - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania S34 - 4th Overall ( ) - Davey Jones - Miami, Florida S35 - 1st Overall ( ) - Lennox Moher - Boston, Massachusetts The fact that two of the three were selected with the first overall selection goes to show you that the United States has a great future. If some of the later round players can make a splash, then the USA will be laughing at the rest of the world. Kazakhstan Kazakhstan has had a very poor crop of players for any league in general. The National Hockey League has never really looks at Kazakhstan for prospects at any level. Most notably from the small country that made the NHL are Evgeni Nabokov and Nik Antropov. However, the VHL has had one lottery pick from the country of Kazakhstan and the player could be the pioneer that the country needs. S32 - 3rd Overall ( ) - Anatoli Zhumbayev - Shymkent, Kazakhstan Shymkent is a busiest city in the country and it is no surprise to find the Titans diamond in the rough come from such a busy place. There has been great return on a player like Anatoli because of the success he has had with not a whole lot of hype around him. Next week we will look at three new countries to profile and get a grasp of their prospect contribution to the league. We may also look at a few names that may come across future drafts and possibly lottery selections as well.
