Biography of Xander Finn

 

Early Childhood and Upbringing

 

Xander Finn was born in Toronto Canada to Fabio and Deborah Finn. Fabio, an aspiring actor/model made very little money, but Deborah was a cheerleader for the Toronto Maple Leafs. As a child Xander attended every Leafs home game and basically spent any and all of his free time playing pond or street hockey. Deborah’s contract promised her security until the Leafs produced their next Stanley Cup, so with her very strong job security the Finns were able to promote Xander’s budding interest in hockey when he turned five.

 

Xander quickly proved to be a prodigy at the local level and continued to hone his craft until the GTA proved to be a little too stifling for his growth. At age 14 Xander packed his bags and left his home behind to enroll in the Daniel Braxton School of Hockey in New York City. Xander was very familiar with Braxton’s legacy, for as he grew older he wasn’t satisfied with only watching Leafs games. Eventually he started sticking around for Toronto Legion games and became much more engrossed with the VHL. During his youth he was always impressed with Braxton’s play whenever the Legion squared off against the New York Americans, and was thrilled to study under the Hall of Famer’s tutelage.

High School

 

The Daniel Braxton School of Hockey was not your average high school. It was a school that completely disregarded traditional educational values such as math, science or history and focused solely on hockey. A program that definitely would be illegal but Braxton hired Jack Black to be the principal, and Black had a lot of experience in faking a curriculum based on his experience filming “School of Rock”. With the American education system in the toilet is proved easy to run a school that spent all its time teaching hockey.

 

Instead of being placed in classes the players were placed on teams, each with their own head coach. Their mornings were spent doing fundamentals, things like skating, puck handling etc. Their afternoons spent in scrimmages with other teams. On Friday and Saturday evenings they would have regulation games as well, in a school wide league that would impact their grades significantly.

 

Finn’s freshmen year he was placed on the Red Team as their 3rd pairing defenseman. Excelling at skating, checking and defense he found himself with decent stats for a freshman.

The Red team failed to make the postseason in Finn’s freshman year, but he was one of the 6 players on the team invited back for the following year. The rest were fired by Braxton in a Gordon Ramsey-esque ceremony.

 

His Sophomore year found Finn transferred to the Blue Team and upgraded to 2nd pairing along with 2nd PK privileges. Along with his usual focus on skating and defense he put a little more effort into passing.

The Blue Team did manage to make the postseason and made it out of the first round in 5 games, but failed in the quarter finals after 5 games.

Finn was again returned to the Blue Team in his Junior Year, this time placed in the 1st pairing and on the 1st PK unit. Finn put a lot of effort into becoming better at puck handling in addition to his other strengths.

Despite a promising start to the season the Blue Team ended up missing the postseason when their goalie broke his leg halfway through the season. Their replacement goaltender was basically swiss cheese and despite the team playing well they were unable to pick up many wins.

 

Heading into his Senior year Finn was absolutely at his peak. Along with being on the 1st pairing, 1st PK unit and the 2nd PP unit, Finn was also made an Alternate Captain for the Blue Team. He finally decided to try and round out his play by putting a little more effort into scoring.

Heading into the postseason Finn knew a lot was on the line for him. It was his final year and job opportunities were difficult to come by for pro hockey players. Braxton rated all the graduating seniors and passed the results on to agents who could help players get minor league deals. The Blue Team had a relatively easy path to the finals, winning the first round in four games, the quarter finals in five games and the semi finals in four games. The finals turned into a seven game slugfest with the Green Team with 3 games going to overtime and the seventh game going to triple overtime with the Blue Team squeaking out a win.

Post Secondary

At graduation Finn found himself approached by Braxton and asked to attend a private meeting. Finn joined Braxton in his office and was introduced to a tall skinny man in a suit. The man introduced himself as Kyle Snow, the man who once represented Braxton himself as his agent all those years ago. He’d been retired for nearly a decade after his previous player, Jax Barnstormer had slipped into a coma after attending practice blindfolded and helmetless.Snow had become little more than a myth to VHL newcomers but he was about to make his triumphant return and was offering his services to Finn as his agent. The two quickly struck a deal and Snow soon after had Xander Finn on VHLM waivers.
