Today is the Season 51 trade deadline in the VHL.  But not only is there the possibility of trades in both the VHL and VHLM, there’s something else that makes this part of the season interesting.  Every year, the trade deadline marks the beginning point of players declaring for the VHL draft two seasons in the future (as well as the next season’s VHLM draft).  These last two seasons have also made the trade deadline more notable, as recent rule adjustments now allow agencies to represent two VHL players at the same time, rather than one.

With a combination of “first players” and “second players” declaring for the draft, one future draftee provides an interesting story.  Lukas Müller, a center with dual German-Canadian citizenship and the son of former VHL defenseman Klaus Müller, declared for the draft at the trade deadline.  He’s chosen to take from his father by representing Germany, the country of his birth, but what he’s done in Canada has become far more significant.  Formerly with the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels, Müller was a once-promising prospect who was released after supposed “attitude concerns” culminated in getting into a fistfight with one of his teammates.  Before entering the Season 52 VHLM draft, Müller will have to sign with a VHLM team for his first minor league season.  His reputation of having an ego and a temper have become as well known as his hockey skills, but only time will tell if he’ll be able to perform in the VHL.
