Old And New Faces In Toronto

The start of the 36th season of the VHL is upon us. For the Toronto Legion this meant that there were some big changes. At first there was the change in front office, where after a long and successful reign Sandro Desaulniers has given up the General Management position to new kid on the block: Tyler Edgar. Edgar is a known face around Toronto being the player agent of two players who played for Toronto for a long time, Jarppi Leppälä and current player Jack Sound, who the Toronto Legion drafted a few seasons ago with their first overall pick. Tyler Edgar lost his trade virginity quite fast when he moved down from the 6th overall spot to the 9th overall spot, in which he gained some extra second round picks.

The main reason for this trade was another scenario, a sign and trade option that was planned with the Calgary Wranglers, so that the Toronto Legion could acquire left winger Chico Salmon who wanted to leave Calgary due to them having to go into a rebuild mode. The loyal person Salmon is decided he didn't want to leave Calgary empty handed. So after having traded down and drafted DuJuan Cook, the newly drafted player was shipped to Calgary in exchange for Salmon. In Toronto Salmon will be taking over the role of the retired Smooth Jive as first line winger in the hopes of bringing the success to Toronto, who hasn't been to lucky over the years despite having a star goaltender in net.

A face that also returned was Teemu Lehtinen, the unrestricted free agent went to test free agency to see what kind of interest there would be for him, but after the Legion had acquired Chico Salmon he was eager to renew his contract. Lehtinen has proven to be quite the successful pick in the S31 draft and will be one of the most important pieces for the Legion this year.

While the general manager switch and the free agent signings brought in some new faces, there was one bigger shock in the Toronto Legion locker room when out of nowhere Nikita Lebedev turned up for training camp. After an absence of almost two seasons he was considered inactive. Lebedev was drafted with the third overall pick in the same year Toronto selected Remy LeBeau, who has clearly became the steal of that draft. In the young years of their careers LeBeau and Lebedev were in a constant battle to see which of them could harness the most amount of training hours until Lebedev disappeared out of nowhere. With Lebedev also starting to update again the Legion defense will likely be better as last season, despite the loss of Dan Tremblay. Tremblay was a welfare claiming defenseman who was traded away in order to create some extra cap space for the Toronto Legion. With this cap space they could make sure both Sound and Lehtinen would be re-signed. If there won't be any more moves this off season this could become vital during the trade deadline if the Legion decide to go all in for the title.
