Chapter 3

“Oh it’s just wonderful to have you lads home,” Mrs. Hamilton exclaimed, squeezing both Jeff @sterling and Phil in a hug of such intensity that it could kill a bear. “David arrived yesterday. It’s been such a henhouse over the past couple of days, writing our Christmas Letter, getting all the shopping done… of course I’ve left you boys with the task of chopping a tree down and bringing It home. Oh and Jeff you must remember to….”

Mrs. Hamilton went on with her chin-wag for a few minutes straight. Her rosy cheeks grew steadily brighter and the ladle in her hand was used as if she were conducting a grand Concerto. The only reason she stopped talking was because something exploded in the kitchen.

“Oh my word!” she cried out. “My potatoes! Now you two put your things in the guest room and come say hi to your father – he in the den.” And she bolted back to the kitchen, her apron struggling to keep up.

Phil took one mischievous look at Jeff and bolted towards the room which they both knew had just one proper bed. Jeff was quick, but Phil’s half-stride advantage was all he needed to plop down on the actual bed and claim it as his own. Jeff fell defeated at the foot of his futon before landing a fist down on his brother’s foot.

Hopping on one foot, Phil bounced over to the window and gasped in wonder. Jeff sidled over to his side to behold their parents magnificent back garden. 10 acres of untouched snow, with the mid-afternoon sunlight reflecting off the snow, making it sparkle with the luminosity of a thousand galaxies. Phil opened the window and inhaled deeply, only to be struck in the face with a snowball.

Jeff laughed from beside him while down below David was wrapping a snowball for Jeff. The two upstairs stumbled over each other to get outside and get their own back, while Mrs. Hamilton scraped off the potatoes from the walls of the oven.
