Height: 6’5'

Weight: 212 lbs.

Place of Birth: Ornskoldsvik, Sweden

Position: Goaltender

Number: 40

Background:

Torstein was born in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, much like NHL Superstars Markus Naslund and the Sedin twins. Coming from such a city, where clearly famous NHL players were born, Torstein grew up watching a large amount of hockey. Whether it be Sweden at the World Cups and Olympics, the Swedish Elite League, or the NHL, he had plenty of hockey to watch at his disposal. The Ironside family did not have any real history of hockey fame, but Tor's parents were always big fans of the sport, and always encouraged him throughout his hockey journey. In his younger years, Torstein started as a forward at local hockey rinks during pick-up games, and one day there was no goalie available to play, so he jumped in the net. From there the path was made, and Torstein fell in love between the pipes.

Eventually, Torstein set his sights on the CHL, traveling to Canada a la Nail Yakupov to play in Canadian juniors to try and impress at that level. Ironside comes from a wealthy family, and his mother was a stay at home mom, so she had no problem moving to Canada with her son to aid him along throughout junior. Not all hockey players have the opportunity that Torstein had, but he definitely did. His parents bought his way to landing a spot to tryout for the Windsor Spitfires. From there, you obviously know he did a fine job by now.

In his one season before activating himself as a VHLM prospect, he played on the Spitfires in 34 games. They leaned on him, but they have a good rotation of goalies there, so he did not get to play in as many games as he wanted. In those 34 games, Ironside posted a save percentage of 0.923%, and a goals against average of 2.24. Those numbers are pretty good for the junior level, considering the amount of goals that get scored there, and it was not long before Torstein received calls to help out a team in the VHLM. He jot his name down as a VHLM FA, and now awaits his turn.

Pros and Cons:

Pros

Size: Being the 6'5" size of man that he is, Torstein Ironsize covers the net quite well. While he is not afraid to come out of the crease and challenge shooters, when he stays in the crease he still covers much of the net when in position.

Positioning: With the size that he has, a lot of other goaltenders like him might find it difficult to move around quickly in the net. Torstein does not have to go through that struggle with these same problems, and stays in position at all times because of his size. You rarely find him out of position,  as he keeps a keen eye on the puck and does not get distracted. Ironside's lateral movement is as good as they come at this level.

Focus: Some goalies might shut down in the big games, but Ironside stays focused at all times. No matter the goals he lets in, or the importance of the game, Torstein stays poised and will not be swayed by controversy. Whenever Torstein would have a bad game, or let by a horrible goal, he allows follows it up with dominance. He is always looking to improve on his performance, and hates to lose.

Cons

Speed: Torstein Ironside does not possess the speed that you might find in other smaller framed goaltenders. Coming with his size is a slow-down in agility, so if he is ever caught out of net making a bad pass, or trying to rush out and missing it, there is no hope for him to get back in time to make that big save. As long as he stays in position with his frame, this is not a con to worry about.

Outspokenness: Wherever he plays, it seems Torstein Ironside is as quiet as they come. Teammates have stated that he is not the most vocal guy when asked about his thoughts, and tends to keep his problems to himself. Also, when he suffers a loss, he usually takes the blame, so he does not go around complaining about it to his teammates. He will take the loss on the shoulder and move on to the next one. Do not expect him to speak out about team issues.

Blocker: Ironside is more of a glove-first kind of goaltender, and he knows his blocker is not his best bet at stopping the puck. Sometimes even when the puck is coming to his blocker size, he tends to use his glove to catch it, because he knows that is his strong suit. Stopping pucks on his right side high is definitely a big weakness for him, and you can look for him to work on that.
