Fook Yu Fitting Into Oslo

www.VHLHockeyNews.com

A new country, a new language and an all new way of playing has not deterred Fook Yu in any way it seems as he’s seemingly fit right into the Oslo Storm squad as if he was always there. In his first 13 games Fook Yu is still searching for his first goal but has 10 assists in helping his squad reach the playoffs. Considering that Yu isn’t slotted in as a prolific point getter, these bonus points are sure to help boost his confidence going forward. In the things that matter more for him, Yu is right up there as one of the top faceoff men in the minor league sporting a 69.79% in his first 13 games. The significance of this versus the two prior centers on the club sporting 50.34% and 46.33% is immense, considering how dangerous the club is with the puck on their sticks. The ability to match Yu up as a defensive specialist has enabled Oslo to spread the talent more and allow players like Brock to focus more on the offensive side of the puck. Certainly starting off with the puck more has been a big plus and Yu hopes to keep it that way.

“I think it’s very important to win those key situations on the draw, whether it’s a defensive or offensive draw, not needing to chase the puck and being the team to have it allows us to control the pace. Also it feels good to be able to shut down the other star forwards of the team and I’ll be looking to improve on that aspect. It’s definitely going to be harder here on out, players are faster and bigger here and some of those guys, you can’t give even an ounce of room or they will get past you right away. My focus is going to be neutralize those guys as effectively as possible with whatever tools I have. Either battling along the boards and squeezing them out of the play or shadowing them so they can’t get the puck as much. I’m definitely ok just knowing that I can bring them down and help my teammates out there.” – Fook Yu, Oslo Storm

Though as it looks from now, Fook Yu has the right mentality but will need to round out his game. Despite his great raw defensive ability, he will still be need to be able to put up some offensive, otherwise he could prove to be a detriment to his line mates out there. The key of course is ensuring that he focuses on playing both sides of the puck, though likely it would mean taking a few more chances or risks along the way. As it stands as well, Fook Yu has not gotten into any serious penalty trouble yet but it is only a matter of time. You don’t play a physical and defensive style without taking them at times so he will also need to learn to take them as needed and not unnecessarily. Overall not a bad start for the first set of games for him, but definitely some things he will need to improve upon if he hopes to make it into the VHL sooner than later.
