Cope 48
JEAN-CLAUDE GIRARD ROOKIE PROFILE Name: Jean-Claude Girard Age: 19 Position: Defense Type: Offensive Defenseman Handedness: Left Height: 6’2” Weight: 205 Potential: Regardless of who takes Girard under their wing, he is expected to go in the first round of his VHLM Draft. A confident blue liner, he uses his speed to create opportunities off the rush and maximizes his offensive skill with his ability to handle the puck with poise. His offensive mind makes him a strong candidate to quarterback a team’s power play in the near future and he sees the game like a top-four defensive player should. He is over six feet tall, and brings a sort of nastiness to his game. He doesn’t shy away from the physicality in the corners. PROS: Offensive Upside - Girard is a defender by trade but isn’t afraid to make plays in the offensive zone. Jean-Claude is the type of player who can read the ice well and knows where his teammates are at all times on the ice. An excellent puckhandler and passer who finds the mark. JC is the type of player who can be counted on to make the big play in key situations of a game. Strength - If there is one thing we can takeaway from Girard’s play, it is that he is strong. His size, weight and strength allow him to impose his will on any player who chooses to face him. He wins puck battles, finishes the big checks and isn’t easily knocked off the puck more often than not. Confidence - An often overlooked aspect of any players game but Girard has it in spades. He believes he’s going to win every game he plays and it is noticeable on the ice. His confidence rubs off on his stats and his fellow teammates. Jean-Claude is an all around player who can be counted on in all situations, including the mental game with his confidence. Not only does he bring the skill necessary to get the job done but he brings leadership and morale to a team on and off the ice as well. CONS: Hot Headed - Sometimes his confident and physical side get in the way of good judgement, making him a penalty minute liability. Dirty checks, pokes and jokes are not foreign to his play by any means. He likes to get into trouble and see what he can get away with. He pushes the envelope and limits of the referees and opponents. He can be compared to a “Brad Marchand” of the NHL of sorts, only worse. Positional Game: Girard is a great all around player and sometimes that comes as a downfall. Because he can block shots, poke check, lay a hit and pass with flair among other aspects, he can sometimes look confused as to what the correct next move is. This often leaves him out of position and sometimes likely to give up a goal. Shot: We mentioned before that Jean-Claude’s offensive side was of value to all VHLM teams, but some may be turned off of him due to the lack of power behind his stick. He gives you more than his worth on PP assists but he will almost never score from the point. His one timers are usually mis-timed, his slapshots inaccurate and wrist shots are easy for any netminder to see and stop due to sheer lack of velocity.
