Trying to prove he is an ageless wonder, Verner Reinholdt recently declared for the VHLM, here is how his player skill set shakes out. Verner is a strong skater with great vision and plays often more crafty than opponents give him credit for. He shields the puck well with his large frame, and is adept at creating plays or getting into a position to take the shot. While he doesn't possess the most lethal of shots, especially as it relates to volume, he is known for being a very precise and accurate shooter. He is primarily an offensive minded player, however he is skilled at defensive positioning and isn't afraid to go down to block a shot. While he may not be a notable hitter, at least in terms of aggression or violence, given his size he isn't afraid to adapt to a more physical style. The real question mark on this player is going to come down to his age, and whether or not he is able to adapt to the ever evolving ways of the VHL.

Adaptive Skating Ability

Out of all the strengths of Verner this is probably the area of the game he excels at the most. While he can still flat out fly despite his age, his ability to stop on a dime, deceive his speed by stopping and starting, and maneuver through the offensive end are as elite as they come. When he's at his best defenders will find themselves getting caught up with each other trying to keep up with the constant pace and pressure he can provide, especially on the cycle.

Offensive Vision

Quote

A compliment skill to his skating ability would be his offensive vision. Being able to spot open teammates, the odd man into the zone, or even sneaky plays like shooting the puck in off the back of the goalie, or bouncing it off the boards to an open man. The flow of the game, especially on the offensive side has always been something that came natural to Verner, and it is a highlight of his game on the ice.

High Hockey IQ

Quote

While being an older player often has disadvantages, one of so much on ice experience is a higher hockey IQ. Verner has often been called exceptionally crafty by former coaches. Most say it's about more than just anticipating where the puck and play are going to go, but also constantly surprising opposing players even with simple hockey moves. Verner seems to see the game transpire slower than others, and it allows him to leverage his hockey IQ and other strengths to be an effective player on the ice.

Age

Quote

It may be obvious but it shouldn't be understated, Verner is entering the VHLM at a severe age disadvantage. His peers should have the natural advantages afforded to them of youth, such as better stamina, an easier time learning and reacting, as well as an easier time recovering post game. In his early days with the Brampton Blades Verner has already had to stay late on a routine basis to ensure his cardio and overall body health as an athlete were in check. The old adage that you have to work twice as hard just to be as good when your older remains true, as the amount of extra hours put in by Verner just to stay fit is proof of that.

Jack of All Trades Master of None

Quote

While there is certainly something admirable about a Jack of All Trades, in the game of hockey it's useful to be a specialist in some form or another. You have your playmakers, your snipers, your defensive defenders, and the list goes on. Verner really is more of an all around player than he is a specialist, which means he may not be as useful as other utility players when it comes to things like the penalty kill or the power play. Line chemistry also has to be taken account, as his all around game would more likely compliment a line than be the centerpiece as is typical to more specialist type players.

Discipline

Quote

By no means is Verner a dirty player, however he has been known to cross the line on a couple of exchanges in the name of the game. Fighting is still apart of the game, and Verner while not an enforcer isn't shy to throw the gloves down if a challenge is made. He also has a high compete level and combined with his size he often can commit roughing or other similar infractions. While it may not be a severe weakness, there are times when going down a man can be a huge disadvantage so scouts warn to know what your getting yourself into with this player.
