TheLastOlympian07 2,388
Back for another week of the Season 5 VHL Entry Draft. This week we will cover the Calgary Wranglers who made 8 picks overall in this draft after a few lean years draft wise. Round 1, Pick 4: Right Wing Devon Marlow-Marta Career Reg. Season Stats: 432 GP | 265 G | 350 A | 615 P Career Playoff Stats: 47 GP | 13 G | 34 A | 47 P The Wranglers were able to draft one of the 4 Hall of Famers from this draft class and Marlow-Marta was the 3rd one to go after 1st and 2nd overall. Poor Avangard took McLovin 3rd overall missing out on Marlow-Marta. Although, McLovin was a good player in his own right, Marlow-Marta is a definitely more than a few steps ahead of him. Devon played in 432 games, scoring 265 goals and assisting on 250 goals for 615 points in his career. He played in 47 playoff games, scoring 13 goals and assisting on 34 goals for 47 points. He won the North American Finals so much that the VHL decided to rename the North American Championship the Devon Marlow-Marta Trophy. You know you were a great player when the league has to rename a trophy after you. He was a Continental Cup champion in Season 8. Round 2, Pick 12: Center Miroslav Ladic Career Reg. Season Stats: 432 GP | 191 G | 245 A | 436 P Career Playoff Stats: 47 GP | 13 G | 21 A | 34 P Ladic was a very good center in his day. He was taken 12th overall and looking at the names that went before him it makes me wonder how he fell to 12th. He played in 432 games, scoring 191 goals and assisting on 245 goals for 436 points. He played in 47 playoff games scoring 13 goals and assisting on 21 goals for 34 points. He was mostly Marlow-Marta's linemate throughout his career. He won a Continental Cup in Season 8 with the Wranglers. Round 3, Pick 20: Defenseman Christoph Walser Career Reg. Season Stats: 144 GP | 30 G | 73 A | 103 P Career Playoff Stats: N/A Christoph Walser was the 2nd of a pair of defenseman playing brothers. Walser number 1 was taken way before Walser number 2 who went 20th overall. He played in 144 games, scoring 30 goals and assisting on 73 goals for 103 points. Very decent but he played only 2 season before calling it a VHL career. He never played a playoff game. Round 3, Pick 21 (via Vasteras): Defenseman Andrew Ferrin Career Reg. Season Stats: 288 GP | 27 G | 95 A | 122 P Career Playoff Stats: 25 GP | 2 G | 4 A | 6 P With the 2nd of back to back picks in the 3rd round, the Wranglers took another defenseman in Andrew Ferrin. He was a very solid depth defender who focused more on his own end than the offensive side of the puck. He played in 288 games, scoring 27 goals and assisting on 95 goals for 122 points. He also played in 25 playoff games scoring 2 goals and assisting on 6 for 8 points. Round 3, Pick 23 (via Stockholm): Right Wing Ace Lightning Career Reg. Season Stats: 504 GP | 235 G | 358 A | 593 P Career Playoff Stats: 77 GP | 31 G | 45 A | 76 P What a steal this pick turned out to be. I bet Stockholm really regrets dealing this 23rd overall pick as it turned out to be Winger Ace Lightning who had a very good career. He played in 504 games, scoring 235 goals and assisting on 358 goals for 593 points. He did most of his damage though in the playoffs where he played 77 games, scoring 31 goals and assisted on 45 goals for 76 points. He won the Continental Cup in Season 8 and in Season 10 so he was a proven winner in his career and will go down as one of the best 3rd round picks ever. Round 4, Pick 28: Left Wing Kerad Jones Career Reg. Season Stats: 238 GP | 27 G | 38 A | 65 P Career Playoff Stats: 26 GP | 2 G | 1 A | 3 P A 4th round pick for Calgary was Kerad Jones who ended up playing in 238 games and scoring 27 goals while assisting on 38 goals for 65 points. Not much more you can ask from a 28th overall pick other than to give you some depth, which Jones did give the Wranglers for 238 games or so (may have been traded or free agent). Round 5, Pick 36: Goaltender Raul Thundercat Career Reg. Season Stats: 69 GP | 9 W | 52 L | 3 OTL | 0.859 SV% | 6.49 G.A.A | 1 SO | 0 A Career Playoff Stats: N/A Last and certainly least is Raul Thundercat who has one of the best names in VHL history but he doesn't have the record to match the cool name. He played in 69 games going 9-52-3 with a 0.859 save percentage and a 6.49 G.A.A. He did manage 1 shutout though but that is about it. Verdict Devon Marlow-Marta is the obvious hit here followed by Ace Lightning and then Miroslav Ladic. It was a pretty decent draft for the Wranglers who went 3/8. Season 4 Draft 1.
