Smarch 3,194
Veteran Corner Ladies and Gentleman the VHL season has finally gotten underway! Season Fifty-Five was delayed for still unknown reasons but the season has started and the season seems to be going as many had planned. Quebec, New York, Helsinki, and Stockholm are going to be the four teams to watch as the season winds down once again, and barring any huge moves by the clubs, they look to be set going forward with their limited cap space and available players. Today we’ll look at some veteran players making an impact in the early stages of the VHL season, even though with less than twenty games played the youngsters seems to be making the biggest impact. Rhett DeGrath (Stockholm): Fresh off signing a two year extension in the off-season with the Vikings, DeGrath is once again looking like a top goalie in the VHL in Season Fifty-Five. After a disappointing end to last season for DeGrath especially in the playoffs in Season Fifty-Four, the youngster from Canada was determined to never have the worst games in his career on the biggest stage again. DeGrath put in great amount of work the past three seasons, and the trend continued in the off-season as DeGrath now has the most practice hours of any of the Season Fifty-Two draft class. DeGrath has played in all sixteen games this season for the Vikings posting 14-2 record, while also putting up a .944 goals against average and 1.18 goals against average, both of which are good enough to put him second in the league in both categories. DeGrath will look to continue this great play over the course of the seasons and into the playoffs, hoping to cap off his fourth season in the league with his first Continental Cup. Diana Maxwell (New York): After heading to free agency after the Americans were beaten by the Meute in the Conference-Finals last season, Maxwell decided it was best for himself and the league parity if he returned to New York. Maxwell looked like he made a personal choice returning to the Americans, as through sixteen games this season with the team he leads the clubs in points with nine goals and fourteen assists. After signing a contract that will keep him in New York for two seasons, Maxwell showed his commitment to a franchise that went out and took him out of a tough situation after he was drafted to the lowly Stockholm Vikings out of the Season Fifty VHL Entry Draft, as even if he leaves via free agency next season the club should receive a good return for the Minneapolis native. Theo Axelsson (Helsinki): Coming off his second consecutive ninety point season with the Titans, a Continental Cup win, and first Scott Boulet trophy for league’s top two-way forward, Axelsson is looking to add more to his impressive resume in Season Fifty-Five. Axelsson is again off to a hot start this season with two goals and twelve assists in the Titans sixteen games so far, but finds himself sitting outside the top ten in hits in the early part of the season. Axelsson was brought over to shore the scoring for Helsinki back in the Season Fifty-Two off-season, and has provided them with a great secondary scoring punch and two-way game. Axelsson will look to improve his game slightly as the year rolls on, but he currently looks like he is in good position to advance back to the finals and hoist that cup once again.
