Mathias Chouinard is a player I firmly believe should be in the Hall of Fame. The fact he isn't in the HoF is a crime to be honest. That is not here nor there though. Here is the career of one Chouinard.

Mathias started his career with the Minot Gladiators of the VHLM after being drafted in the 3rd Round, 20th overall by the Calgary Wranglers. He was sent down to the minor league affiliate because at the time the VHLM had parent clubs much like the NHL/AHL clubs. In Season 18, Mathias scored 49 goals and assisted on 70 goals for 119 points. Despite the great season from Mathias and a few other on Minot, the Gladiators missed the 12 points behind the Saskatoon Wild.

Mathias and Minot bounced back in a big way in Season 19 as Mathias led Minot in scoring with 82 goals and 113 assists for 195 points. The Gladiators finished 1st in the North American Conference with 102 points which was 19 points ahead of the 2nd place Saskatoon Wild. In the playoffs, the Gladiators would play the Wild and after 7 hard fought games, Minot prevailed and advanced to the finals. In the final, it took 5 games to beat the Kolari Panthers. Minot was your Season 19 Founders Cup Champions. Mathias scored 13 goals and assisted on 14 goals for 27 points in 12 playoff games. Mathias won the Skylar Rift Trophy as Playoff MVP.

After Season 19, Mathias had no more left to prove in the VHLM so he was recalled to the big club in Calgary. In his rookie season, Matha scored 32 goals and assisted on 60 goals for 92 points in 72 games. It was a very fine rookie season however, he did not win the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy for Top Rookie, that went to Michael Angelo. The Wranglers missed the playoffs as well by a massive 44 points behind the Seattle Bears.

In Season 21, Mathias improved from his rookie totals with 55 goals and 63 assists for 118 points. Again, Mathias had a great season but the Wranglers still weren't a playoff ready team as they finished with 53 points which was 54 points behind the last playoff spot held by the Seattle Bears. Pretty disappointing for all those involved in Calgary because a few players had some really great seasons.

In Season 22, Mathias regressed just a little bit to the tune of 50 goals and 47 assists for 97 points. Still a very great season but not as good as his last. Despite this, Calgary made the playoffs for the first time since Season 19 when they won the 2nd of back to back championships. The Wranglers put up 96 points on the season which was 44 points ahead of the 3rd place New York Americans. In the playoffs, the Wranglers would play the 1st place Toronto Legion who finished 30 points ahead of them in the standings. After 7 hard fought games, the Legion did prevail over Calgary. Mathias scored 3 goals and assisted on 5 goals for 8 points which led the team in scoring.

In Season 23, the Wranglers closed the gap on Toronto finishing 1 point behind them in the standings. They also had around the same lead over the 3rd place New York Americans who finished with 60 points, 36 behind the Wranglers. Mathias had his worst season of his career, which wasn't bad at all with 43 goals and 43 assists for 86 points. Still a solid season, but not as good as we were used to seeing from Mathias. In the first round, the Wranglers and Legion would due battle for the 2nd straight year. After 5 games, this time Calgary won out and would move on to the finals against the Helsinki Titans. After 7 games, and a final to remember the Wranglers won for the first time since Season 19. Mathias was named Daisuke Kanou Trophy winner as Playoff MVP after scoring 9 goals and assisting on 10 goals for 19 points in 12 games.

 

Season 24 - HC Davos Dynamo

In Season 24, Mathias Chouinard was traded from the Calgary Wrangler to the HC Davos Dynamo in the European Conference. Mathias was traded with a Season  26 Calgary 3rd Round Pick (Stanislav Czerkawski) for David Vidal and a Season 25 Davos 1st (Johannes Hwoarathmund). Mathias seemed reinvigorated after a trade to Davos as he scored 57 goals and assisted on 67 goals for 124 points which was a career high. The Dynamo finished 1st in the European Conference with 110 points which was 9 points ahead of the Helsinki Titans. In 5 games, the Dynamo beat the Titans in a relatively easy fashion. Davos moved on to the finals to face a familiar foe in Toronto. After 6 hard fought games, the Dynamo won the Continental Cup for the first time since Season 20. Mathias scored 5 goals and assisted on 8 goals for 13 points in 11 games. Mathias is a Cup Champion again for the 2nd season in a row.

Coming into his last season, Mathias wanted to go out with a bang. He scored 49 goals and assisted on 58 goals for 107 points which was the 3rd time in his 6 seasons he finished with more than 100 points. The Dynamo were the Victory Cup Winners as top Regular Season team with 102 points which was 1 point up on the Vasteras Iron Eagles. In a series many expected to go to 7 games, the series between Davos and Vasteras only went to 6 with Davos moving onto the finals to play the New York Americans. After 5 games, the Dynamo were back to back champions. Chouinard scored 6 goals and assisted on 5 goals for 11 points in 11 games.

Mathias Chouinard had a very great career spanning 434 games, scoring 286 goals and assisting on 338 goals for 624 points. He also played in 41 playoff games scoring 23 goals and assisting on 28 goals for 51 points. He has a full trophy cabinet plus he was part of 3 straight Continental Cup winning teams. I believe he is HoF material but over the years VHL HO disagrees but it is what it is.
