Jukka Hakkinen was taken 3rd overall in the Season 18 VHL Entry Draft by the New York Americans. It came to my surprise that Hakkinen's pick was never traded and the New York Americans kept this pick right from the very start.

Jukka Hakkinen jumped straight to the VHL in Season 18 bypassing the VHLM. He scored 15 goals and assisted on 32 goals for 47 points. It was a decent rookie season but nothing to write home about. The New York Americans made the playoffs as the 2nd seed and would face the Calgary Wranglers in the playoffs. In a thrilling 7 game series the Americans ended up losing to the Wranglers who went on to win the Cup. Jukka scored 1 goal and assisted on 1 goal for 2 points.

Jukka almost doubled his points output in Season 19 with 35 goals and 45 points for 80 points. It was a very solid follow up to his rookie season. However the Americans could not keep their place in the playoffs and fell 6 points shy of the Toronto Legion who overtook them.

In Season 20, Jukka improved his point totals once more with 63 goals and 67 assists for 130 points. It wound up being his career high and it was a pretty impressive total if we are going to be completely honest. The Americans though continued to fall in the standings this time falling to last in the NA Conference with just 23 points on the season. Which was 58 points behind the Seattle Bears for the last playoff spot.

In Season 21, Jukka fell a little from the heights he reached in Season 20. This time Jukka scored 'only' 53 goals and assisted on 48 goals for 101 points. If you thought it couldn't get any worse from Season 20 to Season 21 you were wrong as the Americans fell to just 16 points on the season. The Americans finished 91 points behind the Seattle Bears for the last playoff spot which might be a record to be honest.

Was Jukka starting to age? For the 2nd straight season he regressed this time to 47 goals and 44 assists for 91 points. It was concerning for him to regress to under 100 points but it was still a good point total to end up with. New York improved themselves as well with 52 points on the season climbing out of the basement to 3rd in the NA, but was still 44 points behind the 2nd place Calgary Wranglers.

In Season 23, Jukka showed us one of his best seasons of his career despite entering 'regression'. Jukka scored 57 goals and assisted on 64 goals for 121 points. The Americans continued to improve this time finishing with 60 points on the season, but once more it was still 36 points short of the final playoff spot held by the Calgary Wranglers.

Season 24 was a breakthrough in the making as the Americans made the playoffs for the first time since Season 18. Jukka scored 46 goals and assisted on 63 points for 109 points in a solid effort for New York. The Americans improved again to 76 points which was 31 points more than the Calgary Wranglers. In the playoffs, the Americans would play the Toronto Legion who easily dispatched them in 5 games. Jukka only scored 1 goal in the series and that probably was the reason why New York didn't do so good.

Season 25 was the final season in Jukka's career. He would scored 47 goals and assisted on 49 goals for 96 in his final regular season. This meant further improvement for the New York Americans who now led the conference in points with 98 points which was 8 more than the Toronto Legion. The Americans would play the Legion in the playoffs and in a surprise turn of events, the Americans swept Toronto. Moving onto the finals, the Americans would play the HC Davos Dynamo, and in the finals the Americans would lost in just 5 games. Jukka scored 5 goals and assisted on 6 goals for 11 points in 9 games. He tried to get that elusive cup that he has failed to get his hands on. It was a bitter end to a great career.
