We took a little walk down memory lane and stumbled upon a scouting report we did a few seasons back regarding one of the leagues current big up and coming, possibly elite defenders. Though his career hadn't started off as great as it potentially could have, it seems as though the two-way defender from Russia is finally catching edge in the Victory Hockey League. Some often wondered if maybe his potential was higher than his actual ceiling as numerous fans and critics around the league thought he'd be an explosive player even on an extremely weak Seattle team. Despite this, we asked 25 scouts two seasons ago their thoughts on this situation and 92% agreed that his ceiling was much higher than the level he was currently playing at. Looking back at that season to this one, we'd have to strongly agree with them. When comparing it to our initial scouting report when he first entered the VHL community, we'd boldly like to admit we were maybe a little off. You can read that old scouting report HERE. With that out of the way, we'd like to evaluate and do a retake on Aleksei Federov.

Player Name: Aleskei Federov

Age: 20

Birthplace:  Novosibirsk, Russia

Height: 6'2.5"

Weight: 207 pounds

Federov wasted little time entering the VHL and found himself playing for the Seattle Bears during Season 55. Hard times had fallen on the Seattle organization, as multiple retirements and a failed attempt at a cup run had run spoiled and the team decided to fold their hand and enter a rebuild. During the draft, one of the players selected was explosive, two-way defender Aleksei Federov. With strong play over in Russia and a fairly reliable and consistent player agent, his rating ranged from 7.5 to 9.0, with us giving him a fair rating of 8.5B. During his rookie season, he managed 43 points (17 goals, 26 assists) through the 72 game season. He also managed 182 hits, 241 shots and led any other player on the Bears organization by 25 points. His performance throughout the season may not have seemed like anything special on paper, but given all circumstances in Seattle, it was actually rather exceptional. Those who knocked him on this season were silly to do so. The 25 point lead alone gives  clear description that he was carrying all the weight and had no other support to fully blossom into the player a majority of managers, scouts and fans expected him to become.

The following season was going to be a big one. The team has a massive pick in the draft, landing Gabriel McAllister. In addition to McAllister, the team also signed some depth players and brought up Xavier LaFlamme and Key Perought. Though the signings and other additions weren't huge, they were better support than the season prior. The season is currently 43 games in and he's officially passed his rookie season totals. So far, he has managed 15 goals, 31 assists, 46 points and a fair amount of hits with 94. With Seattle acquiring some extra talents to the team, it seems as though they've boosted their star defensemen and pushed him to play a better game.

The rating

He's come a long way since entering the VHLM when he received the rating of 8.5B. With a fairly successful rookie campaign completed and a stronger sophomore season underway, we're thinking that an evaluation of our scouting report wasn't totally a bad idea. Though we wouldn't say the jump is too crazy, we feel as though change is needed. He has displayed strong player and consistency in his training. With Seattle getting stronger by the season, we feel his trend in exceptional player will only continue and become better. In 2 seasons time, we feel as though he could potentially be fighting for the #1 spot in the league for top defender (we'd gamble and say MAYBE next year too). To cap it off, here is what we feel he has become:

9.0A

6 for Federov
