With the Hamilton Canucks winning the inaugural VHL game in Calgary against the Wranglers, we travel all the way to Europe to see the Amstel Tigers take on the Helsinki Frostbite in Helsinki. Game 2: Amstel Tigers vs. Helsinki Frostbite

This game took place in Helsinki, Finland. 15,060 fans game out to watch the inaugural game in Europe take place. In the first period it was a very spirited affair with LeRoy Jenkins take a slashing minor to give Amstel its first PP. Nothing really came of that with goalie Sam Lafleur not facing a single shot. You would think this would fire up the home team with a big penalty kill right? Nope, about six minutes after the penalty, Anton Volchenkov scored with assists going to Andrei Nazarov and Andy Sutton. Three minutes after that the Tigers took a penalty with Chris Maher going off with a tripping minor. The penalty was later killed off and with all the momentum way, Franz Lindemann scored twenty seconds after Maher got out of the box. The goal was assisted by Michael Chabot. The Frostbite was clearly out played with the shots severely tilted in Amstel's direction ten to three.

At the start of the second period the game has finally started to become more even with Helsinki showing some life. With some shots on goal and some hits, they almost fought their way back into this game. All this fight resulted in Oscar Keller scoring a goal at 16:06 of the second period. The goal was assisted by Boris Mironov and Blair Betts. The Helsinki Frostbite brought the crowd back into the game with this goal and outshot the opposition eight to four.

The 3rd period was more grinding and hitting than finesse and shots. The final shot count of the third period was five to three Amstel. During the last minute of play however, is where Helsinki got these shots with Bill Mucklat getting two and Bill Lindsey providing the last hurrah with the goaltender pulled. The only thing of note that happened was Jeff Downey taking interference minor at 0:21 of the third period. The penalty kills were perfect with both going two for two and one for one with Helsinki killing of two powerplays. Robert Sharpe stood tall with thirteen saves on fourteen shots. Sam Lafleur did decent himself stopping seventeen of nineteen shots. The three stars went to Anton Volchenkov, Robert Sharpe and Franz Lindemann getting first, second and third respectively.

Game 3: Stockholm Thunder vs. Toronto Legion

This is the first intercontinental in VHL history. This game pitted Stockholm travelling all the way to Toronto to face off against the Legion. Stockholm to Toronto is approximately 3,930 miles, so that is a long way and quite the time difference. There is a 6 hour difference between Stockholm and Toronto, so when it is 8 PM in Stockholm it is only 2 PM in Toronto. A crowd of 14,464 came to see this historical event.

In the first period the Stockholm Thunder came out hitting everything in sight with them out hitting the legion six to one. Stockholm out shot Toronto in the first period seven to three, however, with them coming out gun blazing I think they became a little too aggressive with Toronto scoring the first goal. Vaclav Pletka scored with assists going to Trent Klatt and Vaclav Prospal. To with my statement of Stockholm being the aggressor they took two penalties. This penalties went to Chris Julien for hooking and Travis Green for high sticking. Stockholm successfully killed the penalties off.

The second period started off with a bang as Marian Oshie took a penalty for boarding at 0:13. Stockholm's penalty killing was definitely on the ball as they killed off another penalty going three for three so far. This must have given them some much energy as Stockholm scored the next goal at 5:10. Guillaume Latendresse scored with assists going to Steve Kent and Travis Green. This tie game was short lived as three minutes later with Vaclav Prospal scoring. The assists went to Vincent Damphousse and Vaclav Pletka. Once again too, the Thunder out shot Toronto six to three as well as out hit them six to one.

The third period was much different from the first two as Stockholm must have run out of gas. They were outshot eight to nothing. How can you not muster up a shot when you are down one goal? There really was no sense of urgency in this third period as they barely out hit the Legion, two to one. Toronto scored a goal at 1:29 of the third period. Aiden Alexander scored with assists going to Keyser Soze and Ryan Downey. I think this goal so early in the period may have just drained them from their energy. Maxim Desny won the game as he stopped twelve of the thirteen shots sent his way. Ookie Mexico wasn't as good as he only stopped eleven of fourteen. The Vaclavs picked up first and second star honours as Pletka and Prospal received first and second respectively. Third start went to Aiden Alexander.

Day 2, Game 4: Seattle Everblades vs. Vasteras IK

If you thought the travel from Toronto to Stockholm was bad, try travelling from Seattle to Vasteras. The approximate distance is around 4,672 miles give or take. The time difference is eight hours. That's a horrible time difference. That means when it is 8 AM in Seattle it is 5 PM in Vasteras. A crowd of 15,439 came to see this game, including some die hard Seattle fans.

The first period was all Vasteras, all the time. Vasteras out shot Seattle seven to two as that time difference must really be playing a part in the beginning of this game. The first goal in Vasteras history belongs to Wayne Primeau with the only assist going to Vitali Yachmenev. Toby Petersen let out some steam by taking a bad penalty shortly after the goal as he went to the sin bin for two minutes after taking a roughing minor penalty. Seattle killed the penalty and was creating some steam but Yannick Tremblay seemingly crushed those comeback hopes with a late first period goal at 19:30 with assists went to Wes Walz and Wade Belak.

The second period was definitely not like the first because on three total shots made it on goal. Vasteras had two while Seattle had one. Don't think that this period wasn't hard fought though as there was a lot of grinding and hitting in this period. At 1:49 Aaron Hill took a hooking minor, then Todd Rohloff took exception as didn't like being hooked as he took a roughing minor. The only shots of the period took place on this four on four.

The third period started off with a bang as Jon Clarke took a high sticking minor penalty five seconds in. Seattle gained momentum from this PP as they didn't score directly from it but they scored one minute after the penalty expired. Christian Stolzschweiger scored at 3:50 of the third period with assists going to Joey Kendrick and Alex Watson. After all this has happened Stolzy killed all the moment after his goal by taking a hooking minor. The PK did its job and the game went on. With Seattle pushing hard to tie the game, an unlikely hero in the form of Todd Fedoruk tied the game with Waldo Cezar getting the only assist.

Overtime solved nothing so the game went to a shootout. With Vasteras being the home team, Seattle got to shoot first. Alex Watson came streaking in but was stopped by Matthew Pogge. Scotty Campbell was up next for Vasteras and he was stone cold robbed by Tyler Vassell. That brought up Tyler Toews for Seattle and he gave a poor attempt on Pogge who easily stopped him. Jon McKelvie was up for the IK and he did not disappoint by making Vassell look foolish with a beautiful deke. This laid all the pressure on Stolzy and he came in and tried to go top shelf but missed the net by a mere few inches. First star went to Wayne Primeau , second star went to Yannick Tremblay and third went to Christian Stolzschweiger. Matthew Pogge picked up the win stopped eight out of ten shots plus two more in the shootout. Tyler Vassell sure kept his team in it stopping fifteen of seventeen plus one more in the shootout.
