Vasteras Falling Behind in Playoff Race

Recommended Posts

VASTERAS, SWEDEN – With Cologne’s rebuild kicking into gear, it would seem that the Express’ deals at the trade deadline would mark the perfect opportunity for the Vasteras Iron Eagles to make their playoff push.  However, a recent fall from grace from the team that seemed to be an obvious playoff team has resulted in a 2-7-1 record in their last 10 games, as well as a 6-point difference between Vasteras and Cologne, with the Express in line to make the playoffs.

Despite recent trades sparking criticism towards general manager Thomas Corcoran, it seemed to be a consensus that the team would still be improved.  Mid-season acquisition Keiji Toriyama, despite being among the league’s leading scorers at the beginning of the season, has scored 24 points in 28 games in an Iron Eagles jersey – certainly nothing to be scoffed at, but not what was expected when he was added to the team.  Willem Janssen and Zach Cuff, at one point the team’s main offensive threats, have fallen to below a point per game on the season – 61 points in 66 games for Janssen, and 60 in 66 for Cuff.  “It’s obviously frustrating,” said Janssen of the team’s drop in performance.  “We’re obviously in a tough spot right now, but the only thing we can do is just to calm down and try to take things one game at a time.  As long as we don’t overthink things we should at least improve our performance.”
