Karl von Moltke - LW

Scouting report: Left Winger Karl von Moltke is a fledgling young hockey player out of Germany who currently plays for the Ottawa Lynx of the VHLM. Moltke is a decent sized prospect, standing at 5'11" and weighing in at 200 pounds. Not a particularly imposing figure, but adequate to get the job done on the wing. He plays with great strength, especially for his size, often imposing his will on smaller and larger opponents. That strength has helped him to a team high 50.67% faceoff win rate despite not practicing faceoffs at all. It also helped him be the proprietor of Ottawa's only fight win on the year. His second best trait is probably his passing; he passes the puck with great speed and accuracy for a player his age, though it didn't translate too well to the final stat line this year as he collected just 11 assists in 55 games played, just one assist for every 5 games played. Despite the low numbers this year, it's certainly the area we expect him to contribute in the most going forward. Certainly more so than goal scoring, which is a category that he's shown little to no aptitude in and his numbers reflect that, collecting a mere 6 goals in 55 appearances. If you need a goal scorer, stay far away from von Moltke. That may be offset by his defensive prowess, however, an area which doesn't show up too much on the stat sheet but from the eye test we can tell that he's a very solid defensive player. While not exactly a stalwart, he's certainly competent in this area of the ice and it certainly helps that his puck handling is another strength, augmenting his defense and strength pros as well to create a pretty well-rounded two-way forward. To be a good forward you need to skate well, that's a given. Really, to be a good hockey player you need to skate well. Karl von Moltke does not skate well at this time. He routinely trips and looks lost out there compared to his competition. He's certainly got the legs to be a fantastic skater, but he just doesn't know how to skate well yet. As far as weaknesses go, this might be his most obvious and egregious one. The final weakness we'll talk about here is his checking ability. Kind of in the same vein as the skating, he's got the ability to be a great hitter but my god is his technique sloppy. He often whiffs and, combined with his poor skating ability, he falls on his ass and lets the other team out on a break. Definitely something he's going to have to work on if he wants to be a great player in the league, but skating should come first because all else stems from that.

In sum, von Moltke has nice potential for a VHLM player, but he will need more time in the minors to fine tune his game. His core positives are strength, passing, and defense while his deficiencies are in skating, checking, and scoring. We expect that he'll never morph into a prolific scorer, but to become a successful VHL player he will need to work on his skating, and do so quickly.
