Dalton Wilcox 85
Dalton Wilcox Delayed Draft Interview Q: What was the overall experience like at the VHL draft? DW: It was a cool feeling, it’s been a long dream of mine to be drafted into the VHL since I started playing hockey. The feeling of sitting in the stands waiting for your future to be determined was nerve wracking but thrilling at the same time. Q: You were expected to be drafted near the end of the third round, and that is exactly where you went (28th) overall. How do you feel about that? DW: I’m just happy to be drafted you know? Malmo had a lot of picks and I’m happy they decided to use one on me. There was also a lot of a great players drafted ahead of me, so its’ nothing to be ashamed of. I don’t have any grudges against any of the teams, but that being said, it’s going to put quite a chip on my shoulder. I want to prove to myself and to the VHL that I should have been drafted higher and that I can be the best player in the draft. Q: A lot of your teammates from the San Diego Marlins were drafted early and ahead of you. How do you feel about that? DW: I’m honestly very happy with them. Lincoln Tate was one of the dominant defenseman in the VHLM last season and going first overall was well deserved. Phil Marleau was also a dominant two-way force for us and it was no surprise to see him going third overall. I would not be surprised to see these guys have great seasons in the VHL as rookies. Q: How do you feel about joining the Malmo Nighthawks? DW: Like I said, I’m happy joining any VHL team but I couldn’t be more excited to join Malmo. I am reunited with my San Diego teammate Phil Marleau. From my discussions with Malmo’s management team, they seem very excited to have me on board. Although I will be spending my draft plus one season in the VHLM, they and I believe it is the best place for me to continue to grow as a player and to develop my all around game. Q: What lies ahead this season for Dalton Wilcox? DW: In the VHLM I was drafted by the Houston Bulls. I was told by their GM that I am expected to be one of their top players and go to guys this season. This is a role I am happy with and willing to take on in my final season in the VHLM. I see myself being one of the top goal scorers and point getters in the league this season. I learned a lot in my initial season in the VHLM with San Diego and will be willing to pass on some of that knowledge to my newer teammates. A lot of my teammates have also been drafted into the VHL so we have a great core group to build around and I think that we can challenge for the VHLM championship this season.
