So I went back to see who else has failed to capture the Founder's Cup but managed to get the Jack Reilly Trophy which was first awarded way back in S15. The list is a little longer than I first expected.

Vasteras/Moscow:

Zach Arce (Islanders4Life39) S15

Jonkoping/Kolari/Turku:

Jeff Hunter (Hybrid) S17

Bratislava:

Blake Campbell (Banackock)  S44

Houston:

Alexander Pepper (Sonnet) S65

Gothenburg/Oslo/Minnesota:

Frank Funk (Rayzor_7) S67

Toledo/Bern/Las Vegas:

Ron Dayne III (YEAHstlemania) S55

Yukon:

Austin Gow (eaglesfan036) S41

Conner Low (Smarch) S61

Fresno/Buffalo/Saskatoon:

Jack Reilly (CoachReilly) S18

Joey Kendrick (Kendrick) S40

Shawn Howard (TheLastOlympian) S54

Ottawa:

Joey Kendrick (Kendrick) S55

Keaton Louth (Beaviss) S56

I assumed that maybe 1/6 seasons there would be a non championship winner who managed to pick up the General Manager of the Year award. But in actuality, since S15 there have been 13 GM's to do so. That puts the number at 1 in 4 seasons which is probably more reasonable. It seems to be that in more recent times that the GM's lean this way as since S50 there have been 7 GM's, making it 1 every 2.43 seasons. Does this show that more modern GMs have decided that winning isn't everything or is this just coincidence?

I'm probably biased as someone who hasn't won a cup yet, but there's a ton more to VHLM GMing than just winning. Speaking for myself, I have one playoff win, spent all last season tanking, and have a win percentage below .500, but (I think) most people think I'm reasonably decent to play for, because despite the fact that the jury's still out on whether or not I'm actually capable of building a team that can win, I'm at least willing to put in a good amount of work to try to make it happen (this is in no way meant to imply that I deserve any sort of GM award, just a relevant point).

Besides, it would be boring and pointless if we just turned around and gave the Reilly to whatever GM won the cup every season...it should go to whatever GM did something noteworthy for their team and for the league. Winning a cup is certainly a factor in that decision, but to me it's never been the sole defining metric for who should get it and who shouldn't.
