TheLastOlympian07 2,388
Trades In my previous segment, I began talking about the trades that happened from the beginning of Season 18 to the end. Now I will talk about the biggest trade from Season 18 that took place between the Riga Reign and the New York Americans. To Center ~ Stefan Arnason Left Wing ~ Kobe Bryant Season 20 New York American 1st Round Draft Pick ~ Defenseman Japinder Singh Season 20 New York American 2nd Round Draft Pick ~ Center Turd Ferguson To Center ~ Jamie Nathanson Left Wing ~ Zlatan Zanetti Season 20 Riga Reign 2nd Round Draft Pick ~ Defenseman Jordan Payne Trade Breakdown ~ Riga Reign Season 18: Stefan Arnason Regular Season (NYA) – 22 GP | 7 G | 10 A | 17 P | +15 | 8 PIM | 14 H | 64 SH | 6 SB (RIG) – 51 GP | 34 G | 34 A | 68 P | +20 | 46 PIM | 77 H | 287 SH | 7 SB Playoffs (RIG) – 7 GP | 7 G | 2 A | 9 P | +7 | 28 PIM | 10 H | 40 SH | 1 SB Season 18: Kobe Bryant Regular Season (OTT) – 22 GP | 6 G | 12 A | 18 P | -3 | 0 PIM | 16 H | 39 SH | 1 SB (GOT) – 51 GP | 0 G | 5 A | 5 P | +8 | 4 PIM | 8 H | 6 SH | 2 SB Playoffs (GOT) – 9 GP | 2 G | 1 A | 3 P | +1 | 8 PIM | 13 H | 11 SH | 0 SB Stefan Arnason was picked up by the Riga Reign because they needed his massive potential. He was young and his player agent was none other than Scotty Campbell. In his quarter season, he put up 34 goals and 34 assists for 68 points in 51 games. He finished 2nd on the team in scoring albeit 17 of his 85 points came with the New York Americans, so his 68 points with Riga was really 4th in team scoring. In the playoffs, Stefan stepped up and scored 7 goals in 7 games but this was not good enough to propel the Reign into the finals. They bowed out in 7 games to the Madrid Thunder. To go with his 7 goals he added 2 assists for 9 points in total. This playoff really showed that Arnason was making the Reign his own team, just like the Reign would hope he would. Kobe Bryant had some decent potential, he would spend Season 18 in the minors playing for the Ottawa ice Dogs to start then when he got traded to Riga he finished the season playing for the Gothenburg Eagles. He didn’t fare well at all with the Eagles. He put up a paltry 5 points (all assists) with the Eagles, keep this in mind he played 51 games with the Eagles. He was forced to play a minor role with the team so maybe that’s why he didn’t do very well. He stepped his game up slightly in the playoffs when the Eagles went to the finals in the VHLM. He recorded 2 goals and 1 assists for 3 points in 9 games. However, the Eagles still went on to lose in the finals in a 4 game sweep to the hands of the Brampton Battalion. Season 19: Stefan Arnason Regular Season (RIG) – 72 GP | 31 G | 48 A | 79 P | +34 | 89 PIM | 106 H | 294 SH | 13 SB Playoffs (RIG) – 6 GP | 3 G | 0 A | 3 P | -5 | 10 PIM | 11 H | 21 SH | 0 SB Kobe Bryant was traded from the Riga Reign to the New York Americans with S20 New York’s 1st rounder in Season 19. Riga also dealt S20 New York American 2nd rounder at a later trade in Season 18. I will get into further detail when the time comes, but as of now Stefan Arnason is the only remaining player/draft pick that was dealt to Riga. Now back to Arnason, He had a very pedestrian regular season, finishing 31 goals and 48 assists for 79 points. This was only good enough for 4th in team scoring, 5th if you count a player that was acquired in a trade. He was only one a 2 forwards on the team to reach double digits in hits though, as he sure made his presence felt with 106 hits. The Riga Reign made the playoffs quite readily with 25 points on top of 3rd place Helsinki. They played the HC Davos Dynamo in the 1st round of the playoffs. They however fell to the upstart Dynamo in 6 games. Arnason was only able to garner 3 goals in 6 games while finished an ugly -5 tied for worst on the team. That unfortunately was the end of Arnason’s career as it seems, as I can’t find him anywhere else after Season 19. So now let’s take a look at his stats with the Riga Reign. Career with Riga Reign Stefan Arnason Regular Season (RIG) – 123 GP | 65 G | 82 A | 147 P | +54 | 135 PIM | 183 H | 581 SH | 20 SB Playoffs (RIG) – 13 GP | 10 G | 2 A | 12 P | +2 | 38 PIM | 21 H | 32 SH | 1 SB Kobe Bryant Regular Season - (GOT) – 51 GP | 0 G | 5 A | 5 P | +8 | 4 PIM | 8 H | 6 SH | 2 SB Playoffs (GOT) – 9 GP | 2 G | 1 A | 3 P | +1 | 8 PIM | 13 H | 11 SH | 0 SB Stefan Arnason had a very good career in Riga being a point per game player in competitions. The only thing missing was hardware to go with the good season and a half he enjoyed. 10 goals in 13 games in his playoff career are pretty outstanding if you think about it. Although, this was the only piece Riga kept in this trade it turned out to be a very good piece. Kobe Bryant on the other hand spent one miserable regular season in the Reign’s minor league affiliation which at the time was the Gothenburg Eagles. His play picked up somewhat in the playoffs but other than that he was happy to get out of dodge. Trade Breakdown ~ New York Americans Jamie Nathanson Regular Season (RIG) – 21 GP | 6 G | 20 A | 26 P | +12 | 4 PIM | 20 H | 98 SH | 0 SB (NYA) – 50 GP | 30 G | 33 A | 63 P | +24 | 18 PIM | 61 H | 257 SH | 2 SB Playoffs (RIG) – 7 GP | 2 G | 7 A | 9 P | -3 | 8 PIM | 13 H | 19 SH | 2 SB Zlatan Zanetti Regular Season (RIG) – 21 GP | 9 G | 8 A | 17 P | +10 | 38 PIM | 43 H | 90 SH | 7 SB (NYA) – 50 GP | 16 G | 33 A | 49 P | +38 | 51 PIM | 83 H | 212 SH | 7 SB Playoffs (RIG) – 7 GP | 2 G | 7 A | 9 P | -3 | 8 PIM | 13 H | 19 SH | 2 SB Jamie Nathanson was part of the deal that brought Stefan Arnason to Riga. Nathanson had a very good year leading up to the trade posting 26 points in 21 games, he for the most part kept that pace all the way to the end of the season. He finished with 63 points in 60 games while playing for his new club in New York. For those who suck at math, he finished with a grand total of 83 points in 71 games. The playoffs were a whole new beast for Nathanson as he did put up a near point per game, but as you can see he was a -3. New York wound up losing in 7 games to the eventual champion Calgary Wranglers. This was hard fought at they left it all out there. Zlatan Zanetti was also part of the package that sent Arnason to the Reign. He was taking a bit longer to adjust to the new surroundings as he didn’t put up the offensive numbers Nathanson put up upon arrival. He had 17 points in 21 games in a Reign uniform and 49 in 50 in the American uniform. He was a typical power forward though as he certainly hit a lot of players finishing with a total of 126 hits. He saved his best offensive output for the playoffs as he finished with 9 points in 7 game series loss to the Wranglers. He scored 2 goals and had an assist per game. This was ultimately disappointing for the duo that came from Riga as this was their last in New York. Well Zanetti would go on to play 12 more games in the big apple but he was later traded back to Riga. Career With New York Americans Jamie Nathanson Regular Season (RIG) – 50 GP | 30 G | 33 A | 63 P | +24 | 18 PIM | 61 H | 257 SH | 2 SB Playoffs (RIG) – 7 GP | 4 G | 2 A | 6 P | -3 | 6 PIM | 4 H | 18 SH | 1 SB Zlatan Zanetti Regular Season (NYA) – 62 GP | 21 G | 36 A | 57 P | +35 | 63 PIM | 111 H | 255 SH | 12 SB Playoffs (RIG) – 7 GP | 2 G | 7 A | 9 P | -3 | 8 PIM | 13 H | 19 SH | 2 SB Jamie Nathanson and Zlatan Zanetti were acquired for veteran leadership. Seeing as both didn't last very long in New York with Nathanson retiring and New York trading Zanetti back to Riga proves that this trade was really for the sake of making a trade. Final Thoughts Well, in my honest opinion, I think that Riga won this trade, seeing as Stefan Aranson lasted two seasons in Riga before retiring. Although they didn't keep the draft picks they acquired, they still had the longest serving trade piece that was involved. New York even traded Zlatan Zanetti back to Riga. The draft picks were never kept as they were all traded at a later trade. Fire Tortorella 2,653
Context: 3/3 - Like I usually say with these media spots, I enjoy reading these because I get to learn about some of the past trades in the VHL. If anyone is looking to enhance their knowledge of the VHL's past, these are a good place to start. Grammar: 1.5/2 - A pretty long list of mistakes even with the length of the article taken into consideration. Senior Admin Will 4,660 Posted April 21, 2014 Senior Admin Share Posted April 21, 2014 Context: 3/3 - This is a really nice series you have going here. Although I'm still fairly new, I find it really interesting to read about the VHL's history. Also, you have obviously put in the time/effort to do the necessary research to make your articles well informed. Grammar: 1.5/2 - Didn't find anything more than what Flyers found here. I think working on your comma use would really improve your writing. There were both instances where they should have been used and weren't, as well as places where they were misused. Appearance: .75/1 - Again, Flyers pretty much covered this one. Just need to be a bit more careful when you're doing formatting.
