The Music of the VHL

Part 10

Welcome back to another edition of The Music of the VHL! Coming up this week we are turning to the team that has started the season off the hottest, and lead the league after the first 8 games of the season, the Vancouver Wolves.

The House That Heaven Built, by Japandroids

The Vancouver Wolves are in an interesting place right now. After a few blockbuster trades last season involving star players such as Diljodh Starload and Hunter Hearst Helmsley, the Wolves were hoping to repeat their cup success from the S67 season. However, they came out the worse for wear in what seems like their inevitable matchup with the Calgary Wranglers, going to a game seven for the third year in a row. This time, the Wranglers had the last laugh, and sent Vancouver home early.

Vancouver still has a young squad, with a lot of room to develop; their oldest players are their two defensive studs of Starload and Phillefan, who each have two years left to play after this one ends, though Philliefan may struggle with depreciation in the coming years. With young stars rising up in HHH and rookie Brock Louth, as well as a young goaltender in Greg Eagles, it seems this Vancouver team has a lot of time left on their clock.

To represent the Vancouver squad, we turn this week’s edition to Vancouver-based garage rock outfit Japandroids, and the penultimate track off their debut album. We can take the first verse of the lyrics as representing the Wolves’ move from the Quebec City Meute to the Vancouver Wolves.

Quote

“When the soul of the city
 Was laid to rest
And the nights forgotten and left for dead
 [...]
 I happened on a house
 Built of living light
Where everything evil disappears and dies”

GM Beaviss has the task of building this “house of living light” and making Vancouver a shining example for the league; and with his current core of players, as well as an astounding number of picks in the S70 draft, I think he has a good chance of doing just that.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned next week for more coverage!
