As we celebrate the unsung heroes of the VHL this week, I would like to take the time to talk about the Vancouver Wolves unsung hero.

My choice would be β-QUE G. Not much is really known about him. He just comes to the games, sits on the bench and watches the team play for the most part. He never complains about ice time, he is always there to help the team out in practice and is always 100% ready when called upon to do this job.

Backup goalies are very important in the VHL. Sure, it’s understandable that everyone would prefer to be a teams #1 goalie but this is just not going to happen. Most of every teams unsung heroes are the back up goalies who come in and save the day when the number one goalie is injured, needs a break or is just having a bad night in between the pipes.

This season β-QUE G was called into action for the first 8 games of the season. Most fans did not expect anything from him. He was not good enough to be a starter and everyone, even the opposing teams, wrote him off and expected 8 quick losses to start the season.

β-QUE G proved them all wrong. Over his 8 starts he went an incredible 7-1, with a .913 save percentage and a 2.27 GAA. He beat some pretty strong teams along the way such as Toronto twice, New York and even shut out Calgary.

His play was so good that many in the locker room were questioning whether he should be the starter for the season and even Eagles, who was the starter, said that if β-QUE G continues playing well, he should get all the starts.

“ He played excellent for us and helped us win a bunch of games that everyone thought we would lose. His numbers were very good and pretty much equivalent to our starters numbers. He just played lights out” Said the Wolves goalie coach

Having two calm and well-poised goalies is a problem every VHL GM would love to have as the key to any championship team is to be solid between the pipes. Even though Eagles will get the start for the rest of the season and the playoffs, its is great to know that if something were to happen to Eagles that the Wolves have a reliable backup ready to go.

“ He has been such a big part of our group this season. He shows up when called upon and always does his best to help the team win” Said Eagles “ That is what you are looking for in a backup, someone that can push you to play your best and someone that is reliable”

What does the future hold for the Wolves unsung hero? We are not to sure but we can say with 100% accuracy that he will always be ready to go, will never leave the Wolves team and jump in whenever the Wolves call upon his services.
