Malmo Nighthawks vs Prague Phantoms

Game 333

Pregame Matchups:

This is a huge game for both of these teams as they fight for playoff position. Coming into it we have Fizzlebeef at 29 assists, he has been good for the Phantoms this season. Perrin is up there with 25 assists and he's been hot despite the recent losing streak. They got the win against Helsinki earlier in the week so they look to be getting back on track. The Nighthawks look to strike back after that Game 319 1-0 shutout loss to Prague, and have since beat Seattle in their recent matchup. Adrienne is at 28 assists coming into this matchup and has continued to produce for Malmo. Mattalex and Wilinsky have both passed the 20 goal mark this season and look to continue finding the back of the net. Rodriguez has got 24 helpers and he's been good for this team as well. Let's get into the game breakdown.

1st period

As the game starts Cinnamon Block of the Prague Phantoms pulls the hair of opponent Dan Wilinsky and gets a roughing penalty 7 seconds into the contest. Malmo to the power play. Not a minute into the power play Prague takes another roughing penalty as Jacob Perry disrupts a tik-tak-toe scoring attempt by slamming his stick into the legs of Condor Adrienne, thus bringing it to a 5 on 3 powerplay for Malmo that gets some good opportunities but nothing to show for it besides those bruises. Even more bruises coming as Nygren and Perry get into a fight 13 and a half minutes into the first period. Lots of shots and a good amount of hits in the first period but the first goal comes shortly after the fight 14 minutes in when Fizzlebeef wins a neutral zone face off and Teagan Glover catches Michael Johnson sleeping and gets one from outside the blue line. Thats Glovers 16th goal this season and he's looking to get past that 20 mark soon. A couple more minutes later Glover getting more action takes a shot and hits the post, the shot was collected by Dredge which is he shoots and gets blocked off the body of Hugh Chan into the wheelhouse of Wolf Stansson Jr. and he does not miss that opportunity and collects his 12th goal of the season. Late in the first period Phil Marleau gets a burst of speed and Gert B Frobe gets caught with a hooking penalty giving Malmo an opportunity at the power play late in this period. Early in the power play Conor Adrienne starts the play by intercepting a pass in the defensive zone and starting the rush by passing the Wilinsky in the neutral zone. He drop passes to Adrienne who is flying down the wing and takes a shot that is blocked by Cinnamon Block, retrieved back by Wilinsky and he gives a perfect pass to the blade of Sullivan Jr. who deflects it over the shoulder of Brick Wahl. Not more than a minute later the Phantoms get one to end the 1st period on a great cross pass from Vigneault to Havlova who puts it in. 1st period concludes with Prague Phantoms on top 3-1 over the Nighthawks.

2nd Period

The first 12 minutes of this period were filled with shots and a curious string of icings. At 12:42 Rob Mattalex grabs his own rebound and gets one by Wahl for his 22nd goal of the season, Rodriguez and Nygren both granted assists for Rodriguez's  25th and Nygren's 19th assist. Shortly after Johnson was caught once again from the neutral zone face off as a funky play arrises involving a huge hit by Hugh Chan that frees up the puck for BigShotty to take a slapper from the just outside the blue line and surprises Johnson. Johnson reportedly forgot his water at the bench and was asking for it. Second period was sloppy for both teams, they spent a large portion of the game skating in the neutral zone and creating poor opportunities. Lots of interceptions, hits, and skating taking place in this period. The Phantoms get on the power play at the end of the period with Garcia going to the box but they get nothing out of it. The second period concludes with Prague outshooting the Nighthawks 27-17 and leading on the scoreboard 4-2.

3rd Period

The 3rd period looked better than the 2nd period for both teams as they tightened up on both sides of the ice. For the 3rd period, the goalies played at their peak performance. They stood solid as both goaltenders were peppered with shots and multiple shot opportunities. Skaters on both sides willing to drop to the ice to block a shot in desperation, in light of a playoff spot these players will do anything. Shots are being blocked, causing puck luck and chaos, pucks bouncing off defenders but the goalies stand tall. 5 minutes left in the period, Malmo gain some momentum with an icing. Seabass and Stansson Jr. are tired with their unit and they need to get a face off win. They cannot get the face off win and Malmo are able to move the puck around. Rodriguez takes a hit from Perrin in order to make a play over to Marleau, he takes his time and gathers a shot but it's blocked by Stansson Jr, but an unlucky puck bounce lands right on the stick of a streaking Rodriguez and he slips it past Wahl late in the 3rd. Good play by Rodriguez to get back into the play quickly and it paid off. Malmo look to even the score after Rodriguez's late goal. After scoring with 5 minutes left, Malmo spend the next 2 minutes pressuring the Phantoms in their own end with a hard forecheck, Teagan Glover gives a hard cross-check to Adrienne and gets a penalty called late in the game. Malmo puts together some good chances but ultimately get nothing out of it and Wahl stands tall. Prague clears and get the changes that they need, then proceed to get control of the puck and get a couple of shots on goal before the game comes to an end with the score 4-3 with the Phantoms coming out on top.

Post Game Keys:

The Malmo Nighthawks special teams units were great tonight despite the loss, notching 2 power play goals and stopping all 3 Prague power plays. Prague definitely bested their opponent during the 5 on 5 stretches in this game but met resistance on the special teams where Malmo is hot. Brick Wahl allowed 3 goals on 26 shots against while on the other end Michael Johnson allowed 4 goals on 37 shots against. Prague's Glover on the first line gets 2 points, (1G 1A) McGirr on the third line and Vigneault on the 3rd defensive pairing both get 2 helpers for the game. Wilinsky and Rodriguez come out with a multi-point night each for Malmo.

The next few games for Prague look tough as they will be facing Riga, Seattle, and Vancouver. Malmo will be facing D.C, New York, and the matchup with Riga in Game 352.
