jRuutu 2,464
Hunter was voted as the most oldest looking 24 year old couple years ago. Hunter Hearst Helmsley is a player who I think will be in the hall of fame talks once his career is over. There are a few reasons, the first one is how he has grown as a player over the years. In the modern VHL that is a sign of a great player. Hunter early in his career was reported being anywhere between 6´5 and 6´4 with his skates on, many remember him being as soft as baby shit during those first few seasons, barely hit anything. Turns out Hunter was standing on his toes the whole time, we can only imagine how hard it was for him to stand on his toes while skating. Despite that - Helmsley scored over 20 goals in his rookie and sophomore seasons. During the off-season between S67 and S68 the coaches in Riga put together a special diet for Hunter, that former soviet union region cabbage combined with good old American beef did the trick, Hunter was stronger than ever. He stopped standing on his toes while playing and it showed, 188 hits which was around five times more than during the previous season, but that was not enough for management in Riga, Hunter was traded from Riga to Vancouver in the middle of the season. End of that year Hunter broke the 30 goal mark for the first time and he was more of a complete player at that point. Secret behind HHH´s awesome season 69? Season 69 was the best season for Hunter so far in his career, 92 points in 72 games for Vancouver, 356 shots and 295 hits - total domination. Unfortunately, no individual awards were given to triple-H despite being second in points, second in goals, second in hits and perhaps the most importantly - the top center that year, he was fourth-best faceoff taker in the league. How can you not be the best two-way player with the second most hits and 4th best faceoff rating in the whole league? Nobody knows, perhaps HHH and his transformation from somewhat vain blue-eyed male model into a complete tank was too much for some of the voters? Jumping to the ongoing season, HHH has continued where he left off last year on the defensive side, 255 hits in 67 games so far and only center with 60+% in the faceoffs. Offensively this year has not been as good, 73 points in 67 games is still a great total and 30 goal mark is one goal away. When we look at the big picture, HHH is truly a complete player, he can score goals and he is one of the best defensive centers in the league, defensive players rarely get the love they deserve and I think that is true with HHH who should have some individual hardware in his trophy room, he has time still to collect awards. If he manages to add couple cup rings on top of that, I don´t see why HHH should not be in the hall of fame talks, great player and an excellent reminder for all of us on how you can always keep improving.
