In just a few days, Hugh Jass will take center stage at S71 VHL Draft (now being done by teleconference due to COVID-19). Jass has a terrific career in the VHLM and really put his skills on display. After being selected 4th overall by the Bulls, he put up 132 points in 72 games. 35 of them were goals, with an astounding 20 of them coming with the man advantage. Let’s get into what makes him one of the top available players in this upcoming draft, and look at what might make him drop out of the top few picks.

PROS

Powerplay Quarterback:

As we mentioned in the intro, Jass showed a real knack for the offensive side of the ice, especially so on the power play. He scored 20 goals and really led the charge on what was a pretty successful Houston powerplay. This is something that teams really look for, a player to run their powerplay. So this is a major tick in the box for Jass.

Defensive Play:

Above, we spoke of Jass’ ability to play in the offensive end. He also showed a really great amount of talent to step his game up the the next level in his own end. This is an often over looked part of the game, as it’s not flashy and doesn’t count on the score sheet. But Jass was among the league leaders in shots blocked at 135, sacrificing his body at every opportunity.

CONS

Jumps the rush TOO much?:

Depending on the scout, some will tell you Jass has the tendency to want to get involved offensively too often, and will sometimes get caught up ice when maybe he shouldn’t be. More often than not, this tends to lead to a scoring chance for his team, but as mentioned, there has been times when he’s been in the wrong end of the ice for a goal against.

Overall, there aren’t a lot of negatives with his game. He’s got size, he’s got the ability to move the puck and can skate very well for someone with his frame (6’5, 225 pounds). He has a game that should translate quite quickly to the VHL, seeing as most teams will be needing help in terms of D and he has all the tools to do so. Look for Jass to be selected in the back end of round one, maybe early 2nd if he slips. That would be an absolute steal.
