At the VHL awards ceremonies last night, Greg Eagles, swept the goalie awards by winning the Greg Clegane Trophy for the lowest Goals Against Average and the Aidan Shaw Trophy for the best VHL Goaltender.

It is the first time Eagles has won these awards which follows his most impressive season to date. Eagles finished the season 37-17-5 with a .923 save % and a 2.15 GAA.

“ It is an honour to win these trophies and be named one of the best goalies this season “ Said Eagles “ I worked hard in the off-season in order to be one of the best and this just shows that my training regime has paid off. I would also like to thank the Vancouver front office for believing in me and my Wolves team-mates for trusting me to help them win each and every night”

There was some controversy surrounding the Aidan Shaw Trophy due to the fact that while Eagles won it, he was only named on the VHL second team while the Aidan Shaw runner up, Finn Davison, was named on the VHL First team.

Finn voiced some displeasure in this and he believed that he should have won the award, even going as far as to say that Eagles sat out the last 5 games of the season in order to clinch the award.

“ I respect Finn as he was great competition this season but that claim is totally absurd. I actually did not sit out just to win the awards. A decision was made in a meeting with management, myself and spyro at the beginning of the season that Spyro would play against some of the weaker teams in the league and also the last few final games if we clinched.” Said Eagles “I definitely wanted to play but we had a great active player who deserved to get more then the minimum amount of games.” Eagles continued

“I would have also loved to play against some of the weaker teams and pad my stats but we reserved those for Spyro so that he can get acclimated to the VHL. For me it has always been team first over any individual awards and it would have been a shame to limit Spyro to only 8 games based on his activity and contribution to our team and LR

In the end the Award committee decided that based on stats that Eagles was the better goaltender this season but it was a close race.

We also spoke to Eagles about the future and if he can repeat this next season.

“Well it’s going to be hard to repeat, there is so many great goalies that it’s hard to win these awards back to back and as well I expect even less play time then last season just to the fact that we need to get Spyro in more games”

All the Vancouver fans can’t wait for next season and are excited by the prospect of having the best tandem in the league playing for the Wolves next season
