Cornholio 182
I was planning on writing up something about Wolf Stansson, Jr. - but it kinda gets old writing about the same thing, about Wolf's struggles, how awful his build is, or Prague's general offensive ineptitude while at the same time remaining relevant in the postseason picture… then I read Devise's VHL.com piece about why Brick Wahl is the Likely MVP. This confirmed a thought I had brewing over the weekend after checking out Wahl's numbers on the VHL Portal. For those of you who are still blind… here's Brick's numbers. Season GP W L OTL SV% GAA SO GA SA MP 71 (PRG) 58 30 20 7 0.931 1.96 7 113 1632 3467 If that doesn't wow you, then I don't know what will. In a year where we might not even see a skater break 100 points in a 72-game regular season… or maybe even 90. This tells you a lot about the strength of defense in today's game from an all-around perspective, not just at the top of the mountain. There isn't a skater who is heads over everybody else in terms of points, goals nor assists. So is there a chance for a goaltender to win the MVP? We haven't had one since Kallis Kreiters back in S69. Well, maybe that wasn't a long time ago. How did Kreiters do in his MVP season? S69 -- 45-17-2 .931SV% 1.66GAA 11SO What about a couple of the past winners? Apollo Skye - Quebec S57 - 42-14-8 .931SV% 1.63GAA 14SO Rhett Degrath - Stockholm S55 - 52-11-1 .941SV% 1.25GAA 17SO Apollo Skye - Quebec S53 - 31-28-5 .931SV% 2.22GAA 11SO Sandro Clegane - Riga S51 - 48-10-3 .931SV% 1.40GAA 22SO Hans Winsgate - Toronto S50 - 49-10-4 .935SV% 1.52GAA 13SO Greg Clegane - Quebec S49 - 52-8-4 .935SV% 1.57GAA 16SO Firstly of all… goddamn. That GAA of Rhett DeGrath in S55. How the hell does one get this good? I'm sure the team/defense helped out but still! I hope some of the VHL old-timers can help answer this question for me. Anyways, it looks like you've got to post at least 10+ shutouts. Brick Wahl is trying her hardest - but it can be tough when our Prague Phantoms are struggling to score. Puts a lot of pressure on the goaltender, doesn't it? Looking at the standings, we're the third-lowest in goals. Behind Malmo and Davos. And before the last two or three sim days, we were neck and neck with Moscow for the top seed in the European Conference, imagine that. Anyways - Brick's SV% is up there. Meeting that .931 minimum. Her GAA is the best of the league and the only one under 2.00 GAA. She's my MVP. And she should be yours as well too. See Exhibits A, B, and C for some of the other teams in the league that season. He didn't even have the lowest GAA or most shutouts that season (sv% is insane though). You don't need those stats to be MVP, just clearly the best player on your team and I think Wahl is that without a doubt (HM to Block).
