LATRELL MITCHEL SCOUTING REPORT

Latrell Mitchell has just finished his short career in the VHLM and has just been drafted to the big leagues! His upside seems to be very good as shown by his draft position at 3rd overall to the Calgary Wranglers. His season that just ended with Minnesota was good for his personal stats, but were disappointed in the results of the playoffs getting knocked out in the 1st round. It was a sad end to an otherwise great season. Mitchell was able to put up 20 goals and 61 assists for 81 points in 72 games this season with the Storm. With that he had a +17 rating with 79 hits and 93 shots blocked. While he hopes to improve on his defensive side of the game, he hopes that the offence can continue into the major leagues.

STRENGTHS

DEFENSE - While it may not show up on the statistics, defence is actually a strong part of Mitchell's game. He is usually in great position and has an active stick always contesting the opposing players. As said it may not show up on the stat sheet as much, but he would definitely pass the eye test.

SKATING - Another strong part of his game is his skating ability. He seems to be one of the quicker players out on the ice and that should only get better as his career goes on. This allows him to have that great defence as always being in position and not getting beat on the outside too often.

SCORING - Putting the puck on net is one of the most important things of Latrell's game. He puts a lot of shots on net but also has great scoring chances as shown from putting up 20 goals on the backend. The real threat is when he gets on the power play as he is a great quarterback with 13 of his 20 goals coming with the extra man.

WEAKNESSES

CHECKING - Latrell Mitchell is not the most physical player on the ice which can sometimes cause a problem, especially being on the defensive side. Taking the body is much more efficient than trying to knock the puck off the stick so that is something he will have to work on if he wants to be successful in the big league.

STRENGTH - Again with the physical aspect of the game, his strength is not where it needs to be. He has been hitting the iron a little bit in the gym but it just hasn't reached the point it needs to be. Look for him to really work on this before the VHL season starts.

PASSING - While this is actually something Latrell has worked on a lot in his short career, we're still going to call it a weakness because he is always looking to put the puck on net rather than pass it to his teammates. He will have more trouble getting shots on net playing against a tougher competition and for that reason he may have to start looking to pass to his teammates a little more.

If Latrell Mitchell can replicate what he did in the VHLM, the Calgary Wranglers will be very happy with their 3rd overall pick.
